Description The purpose of this classification is to review residential and commercial building plans and specifications for compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and standards. Examples of Duties Performs responsible technical work involving the review of all residential and commercial construction, additions, renovation plans, blueprints, and drawings to ensure compliance with all applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.

Provides information and answers inquiries concerning building codes and ordinances to the public, architects, engineers, and general contractors. Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable laws/regulations; maintains an awareness of new trends and advances; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate. Performs data entry for electrical, plumbing, gas, mechanical, roofing, structural, and other construction work requiring permits; reviews applications for accuracy/completeness.

Verifies proper City business, state, and homebuilder's licensures; accepts construction plans and plan documents associated with permit processing. Maintains and updates records and files; prepares correspondence and reports. Assists in the collection of payments for permits, certificates, and registrations; issues permits for approved building permits and other applications; reviews and prepares permits and certificates for signatures.

Operates a personal computer, scanner, plotter, large-scale copier, and other office equipment to complete essential functions. Responsibility: Works with some independence with established standards for compliance with codes and ordinance processes. Serves as point of contact in the absence of the Superintendent.

Typical Qualifications Bachelor's degree in architecture, civil engineering, construction management, or related field preferred; and three (3) years of experience in general building construction, code interpretation, building inspection, and/or plans review, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Supplemental Information Necessary Special Requirements: Must possess a valid driver's license. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver's license at the time of appointment and maintain it throughout employment.

Must possess or obtain within one year of hire the following certificates issued by the International Code Council (ICC): ICC Combination Plans Examiner and ICC Residential Plans Examiner -Or - ICC Certified Building Official Applicants must supply complete and accurate information concerning their previous training and experience including a detailed description of their work experience, the names and addresses of all previous employers and the dates of employment. The information is subject to verification. Examination may consist of a written test, a rating of training and experience, a performance test or any combination thereof deemed necessary to adequately screen and rank applicants.
