What is a payload integration engineer?

Payload Integration Engineers are professionals responsible for ensuring that spacecraft payloads, such as satellites or scientific instruments, are properly designed, tested, and integrated with the launch vehicle. They coordinate between payload providers, launch vehicle teams, and mission planners to ensure compatibility and safe installation. Their work includes overseeing mechanical, electrical, and thermal interfaces, performing integration tests, and troubleshooting any issues that arise during the process. These engineers play a crucial role in successful space missions by ensuring payloads are delivered to orbit safely and efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a payload integration engineer?

To thrive as a Payload Integration Engineer, you need a solid background in aerospace or mechanical engineering, experience with systems integration, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools, and industry standards such as NASA or ESA requirements, as well as certifications like EIT or PE, are often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective collaboration and communication skills set top candidates apart. These competencies ensure that complex payloads are integrated safely and efficiently, meeting mission requirements and minimizing risks.

What are some common challenges payload integration engineers face when coordinating with multiple teams during a satellite launch campaign?

Payload Integration Engineers frequently collaborate with cross-functional teams, including spacecraft engineering, mission operations, and launch providers. A common challenge is ensuring all payload requirements are met while aligning schedules and technical specifications across these groups. Effective communication and strong organizational skills are essential to anticipate and resolve integration issues, manage last-minute changes, and ensure safety and mission objectives are upheld. Successfully overcoming these challenges not only ensures a smooth launch but also fosters valuable experience in multidisciplinary teamwork.

Job description

MRI Technologies has an exciting opportunity for a Test Engineer on the JETS II contract at NASA Johnson Space Center, supporting our teammate company ERC on the ECTS team. You will help develop requirements, build testing plans, and execute test campaigns supporting NASA's human spaceflight mission-work that spans thermal, electrical, pressure systems, and mechanical hardware integration and test.

A Day in the Life

Your responsibilities will include developing, updating, and maintaining engineering products such as work packages, procedures, test plans, readiness documentation, and closeout materials. You will support pre-test, test, and post-test activities-including pathfinding, rehearsals, configuration coordination, anomaly resolution, and lessons-learned capture. A core part of the role is coordinating with engineering, integration and test, operations, logistics, quality, safety, and project stakeholders to plan and execute assigned work, and helping identify, track, and resolve technical, schedule, integration, and execution issues affecting vehicle and ground activities. As ECTS transitions into expanded operational readiness, you will also help grow the team's capabilities in future operations staffing, certification, and mission readiness.

What We Are Looking For

Requirements:

  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree in Engineering (electrical, thermal, pressure systems, or mechanical emphasis) or equivalent experience in a related field
  • Experience supporting complex aerospace, flight hardware, test, integration, operations, or vehicle/system development activities
  • Experience developing or supporting engineering documentation, procedures, test plans, or readiness products
  • Experience working across multiple disciplines to coordinate technical work and drive execution
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-moving environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Preferences:

  • Experience with NASA or human spaceflight/project engineering processes
  • Experience supporting spacecraft, payload, or other complex system integration and test campaigns
  • Experience with hardware handling, transportation, GSE, pathfinding, or environmental/functional test campaigns
  • Experience supporting readiness reviews, anomaly resolution, or integrated test execution
  • Experience with operations concept development, console operations, training development, or certification planning
  • Familiarity with configuration-controlled environments and disciplined engineering execution

This position has been posted at multiple levels. Depending on your experience and business needs, we may consider candidates at any level for which the position is advertised.

Benefits and Perks

We offer a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, paid time off, and 401(k). You'll also enjoy a 9/80 work schedule (every other Friday off, when applicable), an onsite cafeteria, and the chance to support one of NASA's most critical human spaceflight programs.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent Residency may be required.

MRI Technologies is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status.

As we are a Federal Contractor, most positions require the employee to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government background investigation. MRI also completes a pre-screening background check for anyone offered employment.
