They work with asphalt, concrete, and other materials to ensure long-lasting roadways. Their role also includes evaluating pavement performance and recommending repair or maintenance strategies to extend the lifespan of infrastructure.

What do pavement engineers do?

Pavement Engineers are responsible for designing, evaluating, and maintaining roadways, runways, and other paved surfaces. On a typical day, you might analyze soil and material samples, use specialized design software to model pavement structures, conduct site inspections, or develop maintenance and rehabilitation plans for existing pavements. Collaboration is a big part of the job, as you'll often work closely with contractors, construction managers, and government agencies to ensure projects are delivered on schedule and meet quality standards. The work can involve both field and office environments, providing a dynamic and hands-on experience in infrastructure development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in pavement engineering?

To thrive as a Pavement Engineer, you need a strong background in civil engineering principles, materials science, and pavement design, typically supported by a degree in civil engineering and relevant work experience. Familiarity with design software like AutoCAD, pavement management systems, and industry standards such as AASHTO is essential, as is having certifications like the Professional Engineer (PE) license. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and project management skills help you excel when working with cross-functional teams and clients.
