How much do pavement engineering jobs pay per year?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in pavement engineering?
To thrive as a Pavement Engineer, you need a strong background in civil engineering principles, materials science, and pavement design, typically supported by a degree in civil engineering and relevant work experience. Familiarity with design software like AutoCAD, pavement management systems, and industry standards such as AASHTO is essential, as is having certifications like the Professional Engineer (PE) license. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and project management skills help you excel when working with cross-functional teams and clients. These qualifications are important to ensure safe, cost-effective, and durable pavement solutions that meet technical specifications and client needs.
What do pavement engineers do?
Pavement Engineers are responsible for designing, evaluating, and maintaining roadways, runways, and other paved surfaces. On a typical day, you might analyze soil and material samples, use specialized design software to model pavement structures, conduct site inspections, or develop maintenance and rehabilitation plans for existing pavements. Collaboration is a big part of the job, as you'll often work closely with contractors, construction managers, and government agencies to ensure projects are delivered on schedule and meet quality standards. The work can involve both field and office environments, providing a dynamic and hands-on experience in infrastructure development.
What is pavement engineering?
A Pavement Engineering job involves the design, construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation of roads, highways, and other paved surfaces. Pavement engineers analyze materials, traffic loads, environmental factors, and cost considerations to develop durable and efficient pavement structures. They work with asphalt, concrete, and other materials to ensure long-lasting roadways. Their role also includes evaluating pavement performance and recommending repair or maintenance strategies to extend the lifespan of infrastructure.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Traffic Engineering Technician supports daily operations of the Engineering unit within the Cambridge Department of Transportation, including pavement markings, traffic signs, traffic signals, traffic controls, parking meters, bike racks, and traffic studies. Reporting to the Principal Traffic Engineer, the role oversees inspections and contractor supervision for the installation and maintenance of traffic controls and pavement markings, assists traffic engineers with project development and design, and collects traffic data. The role requires frequent overnight shifts during the pavement-marking season from approximately April through November.

Oversee inspections and contractor supervision for the installation and maintenance of traffic controls, pavement markings, bicycle racks, and bicycle fix-it stations; address maintenance issues for all types of traffic control devices; and assist traffic engineers with project development and design.
Conduct annual citywide inspections of pavement markings; produce maintenance lists for City and contractor crews; oversee pavement marking contractors during overnight installation; and lay out pavement markings with City and contractor crews.
Lay out locations for new bike rack installations; oversee contractors for the installation and repair of bike racks.
Mark underground traffic-signal utilities for DigSafe.
Collaborate with Engineering staff on ongoing projects, studies, and citizen requests; collect data as needed including traffic counts, observations, speed data, and field measurements.
Prepare traffic-control work orders for the installation, improvement, and maintenance of signs, parking meters, and other traffic-control devices.
Assist with snow-emergency traffic operations.
Perform other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience
Associate's degree in Engineering Science, Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or Construction Technology required; bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field may be substituted for the required experience.
