What is pattern making?

A Pattern Making job involves creating templates or blueprints for garments, accessories, or other textile-based products. Pattern makers translate design sketches into accurate patterns that guide the cutting and sewing process in production. They use specialized software or manual techniques to ensure proper fit, proportions, and construction details. Precision and attention to detail are essential, as patterns dictate the final look and functionality of a product.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in pattern making?

To thrive in Pattern Making, a strong understanding of garment construction, dimensional accuracy, and textile properties is essential, often supported by coursework or experience in fashion design or apparel technology. Familiarity with pattern drafting software like Gerber, Optitex, or CAD systems is typically required, and formal certifications can be an advantage. Attention to detail, creative problem-solving, and effective teamwork are important soft skills for success in this role. These skills ensure the creation of functional, well-fitting garments and facilitate smooth collaboration within the production team.

What are some common challenges faced by pattern makers in the apparel industry?

Pattern Makers often encounter challenges such as accommodating unique design specifications while ensuring garments maintain proper fit and functionality. Balancing creative vision with technical limitations, especially when working with new fabrics or manufacturing processes, can require innovative problem-solving. Additionally, managing tight deadlines and frequent iterations with design and production teams demands strong organizational skills. Collaborating closely with designers, sample makers, and production staff is key to overcoming these challenges and achieving high-quality, finished products.

How do I become a pattern maker?

To become a pattern maker, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, followed by training in fashion design, pattern making, or a related field through vocational schools, community colleges, or apprenticeships. Skills in sewing, drafting, and using pattern-making software like Gerber or Optitex are essential, along with experience in garment construction and attention to detail.

How much money does a pattern maker make?

Pattern makers typically earn between $35,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Skilled pattern makers with advanced knowledge of CAD software and sewing techniques may earn higher salaries, especially in fashion or apparel manufacturing environments.

Is pattern making a good career?

Pattern making is a skilled profession in the fashion and apparel industry, involving creating templates for garments. It requires knowledge of sewing, design, and technical skills, often utilizing CAD software. The career can be stable with opportunities for advancement, but job availability depends on industry demand and geographic location.

What career can you have with pattern making?

Pattern making is a key skill in the fashion and apparel industry, enabling careers such as fashion designer, technical designer, sample maker, or pattern maker. Professionals in this field often work in clothing manufacturing, costume design, or product development, utilizing tools like CAD software and sewing techniques. Advanced skills and certifications can lead to roles in design management or pattern technical consulting.

Responsibilities

The Technical Architect is responsible for defining and driving the overall architecture for the Hercules Cloud Contact Center (C3) platform, including its AI-enabled capabilities. This role partners with product owners, engineering teams, business stakeholders, and data engineering (as well as other architecture teams) to design and deliver scalable, secure, and resilient solutions that improve agent performance, operational insights, customer experience, and decision-making.

The Technical Architect will establish technical standards, lead end-to-end solution design, evaluate emerging technologies, and drive modernization initiatives across C3 platform capabilities—ensuring architectural consistency, technical governance, and long-term platform scalability. This role is primarily focused on architecture and governance, with hands-on involvement in proof-of-concepts and reference implementations.

This role sits within our Horizontal Architecture & Engineering team, focused on innovation and standards. Our mission is to enable rapid deployment, ensure seamless interoperability, and continuously advance Hercules C3 through reusable frameworks, patterns, and engineering best practices.

  • Design and architect Hercules C3 solutions, evolving the C3 platform architecture maturity within the contact center domain.
  • Collaborate with architecture peers, business partners, and product teams to develop aspirational architecture and support production execution.
  • Identify opportunities for proof-of-concepts (POCs) and lead their implementation.
  • Develop reusable architecture patterns and reference implementations (API, event-driven, integration, security, observability, reliability).
  • Drive API-first and event-driven architectures (e.g., API gateway patterns, eventing/async workflows).
  • Architect GenAI-powered actionable insights and AI-assisted agent coaching capabilities, including safe and cost-aware LLM usage.
  • Maintain broad knowledge of application and integration architectures (web apps, web services, integration patterns, data flows).
  • Apply State Farm architecture standards and evaluate solutions against enterprise patterns and governance requirements.
  • Ensure quality across multiple environments through technical guidance, review, and governance.
  • Understand end-to-end interconnections across applications and data flows, including impacts to end users.
  • Provide mentorship and enablement through technical guidance, reusable artifacts, and engineering training.
  • Establish feedback loops with business and technology partners to review and validate architecture decisions.
  • Exercise significant influence across multiple product suites/teams within the domain.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to shape leadership decisions and guide product team technical direction.

Qualifications
  • 10+ years experience delivering cloud solutions on AWS, with architectural accountability.
  • Proven expertise architecting modern, scalable, maintainable, and resilient solutions with agility.
  • Experience designing CI/CD and operational excellence practices aligned to DevSecFinOps, SRE, and SLOs/SLIs.
  • Proficiency with core technologies and languages such as Java, Python, React, and AWS services including:Compute/networking: Lambda, ECS/EKS, ROSA, VPC
  • Storage/data: S3, DynamoDB, Redshift, Glue
  • Integration: REST APIs, SNS/SQS/EventBridge (or equivalent async patterns)
  • Familiarity with AWS Well-Architected Framework and practical application of its pillars.
  • Experience with security and data governance practices (e.g., IAM least privilege, KMS encryption, secrets management, auditing/monitoring, PII handling).
  • Experience with LLM/GenAI integration patterns, including RAG (retrieval + grounding), tool/function calling, and structured outputs.
  • Understanding of GenAI evaluation and quality practices (hallucination reduction, offline/online evals, feedback loops).
  • Contact center platform experience, including Amazon Connect (preferred).
