JOB SUMMARY

The centralized Information Technology Services Department at the University of Connecticut in Storrs is seeking a highly skilled Data Architect to serve as a shared technical resource between the Reporting and ETL teams, with a primary focus on the University’s Microsoft Fabric analytics platform and its supporting data architecture. This position operates under a hybrid work model and requires onsite presence in Storrs three days per week.

The Data Architect designs, governs, and advances the University’s analytical data architecture, with responsibility for defining and maturing an end-to-end Microsoft Fabric implementation utilizing OneLake, Lakehouse and Warehouse patterns, orchestration, Python data transformation, and the semantic modeling layer that supports Power BI reporting.  The successful incumbent will help drive AI and machine learning capabilities into the data architecture, enabling advanced analytics, predictive modeling, and intelligent data services that enhance institutional insights and operational effectiveness. Functioning at a senior technical level, this role provides architectural leadership, technical direction, and hands-on development support for enterprise data pipelines, dimensional models, analytical structures, and reporting solutions. The incumbent collaborates closely with team managers, developers, data stewards, and stakeholders to ensure that institutional data is reliable, well-modeled, secure, and effectively used to support decision-making, research, teaching, learning, and outreach.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serves as a senior shared technical resource for the ETL and Reporting teams, providing architectural direction and hands-on expertise for enterprise analytics solutions with an emphasis on Microsoft Fabric.
  • Design and maintain enterprise analytical data architecture, including Microsoft Fabric (OneLake, Lakehouse, and Warehouse patterns), data warehouses, data marts, dimensional models, and governed analytical structures.
  • Designs, develops, and optimizes scalable data ingestion, orchestration, and transformation pipelines, including Fabric-aligned data flows using supporting technologies such as Python and PL/SQL.
  • Defines and implements semantic modeling and metric standards to enable consistent, reliable Power BI reporting, including shared dimensions, certified datasets/models, and reusable measures where appropriate.
  • Ensures data quality, performance, reliability, and analytical usability across ingestion, OneLake storage layers, Lakehouse/Warehouse structures, and reporting/semantic layers.
  • Translates institutional and stakeholder reporting requirements into well-governed data models, metrics, and analytical structures, aligning designs with Fabric and enterprise data standards.
  • Supports enterprise data governance practices using Microsoft Purview, including data cataloging, lineage, classification, and stewardship alignment, and ensures governance practices align with Fabric platform usage.
  • Establish and document data standards, best practices, and architectural guidance; advises leadership and project teams on Microsoft Fabric capabilities, data architecture decisions, and analytics platform evolution.
  • Performs related work as required. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Ten years of related professional experience; OR an associate’s degree and eight years of related experience; OR a bachelor’s degree and six years of related experience.
  2. Demonstrated senior-level experience designing and supporting enterprise analytical data architectures, including data warehouses, data marts, and dimensional data models.
  3. Demonstrated experience designing, developing, and maintaining scalable ETL pipelines and complex data transformations within enterprise analytics platforms.
  4. Demonstrated working knowledge of database or analytics platforms such as Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle, and PowerBI or Pentaho.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of Python and PL/SQL for data integration, transformation, and analytical data processing.
  6. Demonstrated experience ensuring data quality, reliability, and performance across data ingestion.
  7. Demonstrated experience applying AI/Agentic AI, or Machine Learning, or advanced analytics capabilities to enterprise data platforms, including support for analytical use cases, data preparation, or integration with reporting and analytics tools.
  8. Demonstrated working knowledge of enterprise data governance principles and practices, including data cataloging, lineage, classification, and stewardship.
  9. Demonstrated experience collaborating with technical teams, data stewards, and stakeholders to translate business and reporting requirements into governed analytical data solutions, including Microsoft Fabric semantic models and Power BI reporting aligned to enterprise standards.
  10. Demonstrated experience advising leadership or project teams on data architecture decisions, analytics strategy, and platform capabilities.
  11. Demonstrated experience establishing and following data standards, architectural best practices, and documentation in an enterprise environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Experience with or demonstrated working knowledge of designing, developing, and maintaining scalable ETL pipelines and complex data transformations within enterprise analytics platforms, using Microsoft Fabric OneLake, Lakehouse and Warehouse patterns, data ingestion/orchestration and transformation workflows, and the semantic modeling layer that supports Power BI.
  2. Experience with or demonstrated working knowledge of enterprise data governance principles and practices, including data cataloging, lineage, classification, and stewardship with experience using Microsoft Purview to support governance within a Microsoft Fabric environment.
  3. Experience ensuring data quality, reliability, and performance across data ingestion, OneLake/Lakehouse/Warehouse storage layers, and reporting/semantic platforms including Power BI.
  4. Experience with enterprise scheduling tools such as Control-M or Airflow in a regimented change-controlled environment.
