Operator trainee is the Entry level Operators position on the Sunoco Performance products 30" Still Operations.  This position will be responsible for successfully completing a 6 month to 1-year comprehensive training curriculum composed of classroom and On the Job Training sessions.  The training is designed to provide skill and knowledge to achieve the operations proficiency level required to progress to the Qualified Chief position. This position is provided guidance from Control Board and Fully Qualified Chief Operators to make and implement operational decisions on a 24 / 7 / 365 basis and requires strict adherence to Federal regulations as well as to Sunoco Performance Products high standards of operational integrity and respect for the public safety and environment.  He or she will be trained to make the correct analysis of operational anomalies and the proper implementation of corrective actions in response to those anomalies which are critical to the successful operation of the facility.  The Operator trainee performs assignments with direction from the Sr. Mfg. Mgr. and the Control Board and Fully Qualified Chief Operators while performing On the Job Training.  The Operator Trainee has authority to perform operational tasks only as directed by and under observation of the Mfg. Mgr. and/or Control Board Chief and Fully Qualified Operator.

Required Skills (External)

Education and/or Experience, knowledge. skill, proficiencies, abilities: 

  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in refining operations.

  • High School Education or equivalency.

  • Must be able to obtain a Federal Government issued TWIC card.

  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license for the state of residence

  • Successfully complete HES&S/PSM training and refresher training curriculum

  • Must acquire a thorough knowledge of current operating procedures and safety standards.

  • Must be dependable, and able to work with little or no supervision

Pefered Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of refining operations

  • Fundamentals of Refinery (FOR) school certified

  • 5 -10 years refinery operations experience to Board Qualified level

  • Proven commitment to HES&S best practice

  • Utilizes problem-solving and analytical skills to develop resolutions.

  • Ability to read and understand P&ID / Process Flow diagrams.

  • Proficiency in MS Office computer application

  • Ability to interpret and analyze data and other operational information

  • Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills

  • Ability to act decisively under pressure and exercise excellent judgement.

  • Permit writing / LOTO / JSA.

Working Conditions: The work environment characteristics describe here are representative of those and employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • Assigned to a rotating shift for vacation selection.  Subject to shift hold over or shift reassignment and is subject overtime.

  • Must be able to climb stairs and be able to work out of doors in extreme weather and perform heavy physical labor including lifting of up to 50 pounds in a safe manner. Occasionally requires sitting or standing for long periods of time.

  • Industrial / Manufacturing setting, which may include exposure to various materials and chemicals, as well as extreme temperature conditionsand loud machinery, and require appropriate personal protective equipment.

  • From time to time, be assigned to Day work for additional training.
