The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience.

A Typical Day

  • The Risk Manager is responsible for the Risk Management activities at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center
    • The activities include the identification, evaluation and mitigation of loss exposures
  • The Risk Manager identifies, analyzes and acts upon actual and potential exposures to the organization with a goal of improved patient safety and protection of the organization's assets. This is also accomplished through education and collaboration with all levels of the organization
  • The Manager will be responsible for working closely with assigned areas and team members to facilitate incident review, promote patient safety and support regulatory and risk compliance
  • Enter Potentially Compensable Events (PCEs) into the event reporting system and conduct/document initial investigations,
  • Manage and investigate actual and potential claims involving patients, visitors, employees, and property, including referral to insurance carriers as appropriate
  • Review and analyze event reporting data to identify trends, high-risk events, and liability exposures; oversee closure of incident reports
  • Handle hospital claims and litigation matters, including claim assessment, discovery coordination, subpoena responses, and support of internal and external legal counsel through all phases of litigation and trial preparation
  • Review Summonses and Complaints for coverage implications and ensure timely notification to applicable insurance carriers
  • Partner with Patient Experience and operational leaders to investigate and resolve patient and family grievances to reduce escalation into claims and litigation
  • Respond to inquiries from federal and state agencies and coordinate investigations as required
  • Assist Quality and Patient Safety teams with Root Cause Analyses (RCAs) and implementation of risk mitigation strategies as needed
  • Represent Risk Management on hospital committees and present analyzed risk and claims data to support patient safety and organizational objectives
  • Maintain visibility throughout the organization through regular rounding and consultation with clinical and non-clinical departments
  • Coordinate annual insurance renewal applications, certificates of insurance, and other insurance-related activities as required
  • Administer tracking systems for subpoenas, litigation, claims, and lost or personal property reimbursement matters
  • Coordinate notification and follow-up activities related to medical device recall alerts
  • Educate staff and leadership on risk management principles, event reporting, claims prevention, and loss reduction strategies

To Be Considered

Required:

  • Minimum of a Bachelors degree required
  • 3-5 years minimum experience in healthcare required

Preferred:

  • Risk Management experience in acute care setting strongly preferred

Certifications and Licenses Required:

  • Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CHPRM) preferred, must obtain within 2 years of hire
