Pathology Annotation Jobs in Illinois (NOW HIRING)

Pathology Annotation information

What is pathology annotation?

Pathology annotation is the process of labeling and marking specific features or regions of interest within pathology images, such as tissue samples or slides, to assist in diagnosis, research, or the development of artificial intelligence tools. These annotations can include identifying tumors, cell types, or other abnormalities. Pathology annotation is crucial for creating high-quality datasets that can be used to train machine learning models in digital pathology. It often requires specialized knowledge of histology and pathology to ensure accuracy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Pathology Annotation Specialist, and why are they important?

To excel as a Pathology Annotation Specialist, you need a background in life sciences or pathology, strong attention to detail, and familiarity with histological and cellular structures. Experience with digital pathology platforms, image analysis software, and sometimes certifications in medical laboratory technology are often required. Excellent analytical skills, precision, and effective communication help ensure reliable data annotation and collaboration with research teams. These competencies are critical for generating accurate datasets that support disease research and the development of diagnostic tools.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in pathology annotation, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in pathology annotation often encounter challenges such as interpreting ambiguous or low-quality tissue images, maintaining consistency in labeling, and managing large volumes of data. Addressing these challenges typically involves ongoing collaboration with pathologists, participation in regular training or calibration sessions, and utilizing standardized annotation protocols. Leveraging digital pathology software and quality control processes can also help ensure accuracy and consistency, making teamwork and communication essential components of success in this role.

The role partners closely with the Director of Digital Pathology key stakeholders (AP leadership, laboratory operations, IT and security, compliance, and research) to ensure safe, validated, high-quality digital workflows and an enduring education and mentorshipprogram.

KeyResponsibilities

Digital Pathology Infrastructure and Operations

Strategy and Roadmap

  • Lead a multi-year roadmap for whole slide imaging (WSI) and digital sign-out capabilities across BIDMC Pathology (clinical, educational, and research use cases). Define target-state architecture, phased milestones, resourcing, and success metrics.

PlatformBuild andIntegration

  • Lead (or co-lead) selection, implementation, and lifecycle management for WSI scanners and a scanning operations model; the image management system and enterprise viewer; storage and archiving (on-premiseand or cloud), networking, identityand access controls; and integration with LIS and EMR worklists and specimen tracking and barcoding workflows.StandardizeSOPs across scanning, image QC, downtime procedures, and incident management.

Validation,Quality, andCompliance

  • Design and oversee validation protocols for primary diagnosis on digital slides (pathologist validation, case set design, discrepancy tracking, competencyand re-validation cadence). Build a measurable QA and QCprogramfor tissue-to-image fidelity (staining variability, scanner performance, display calibration, artefact classification, and remediation workflows). Ensure readiness for applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements (for example, CAP, CLIA, HIPAA, and institutional governance).

AIEnablement,Evaluation, andClinicalDeployment

AIGovernance andSafetyFramework

  • Establish an end-to-end governance model for AI tools used in pathology (selection, risk stratification, validation, monitoring, drift detection, versioning, change control, and retirement). Develop documentation standards and oversight pathways aligned with clinical risk, ethics, and equity principles.

AI readiness foundations

  • Build practical infrastructure to support AI translation, including dataset curation pipelines (de-identification, annotation frameworks, ground truth practices); a secure compute environment for evaluation and, whereappropriate, model development; and performance benchmarking across representative case mixes and operational conditions.

Clinical implementation

  • Partner with clinical subspecialty leads todeployAI tools into workflow (triage, screening support, quantification, QC augmentation), including user training, acceptance criteria, andpost go-live monitoring.
