A Brief Overview
Provides assistance in the Department of Pathology undertaking an advanced role in the performance of Autopsies, surgical specimen processing, photography, and instructional teaching of all rotating students, residents, and fellows
What you will do
  • Under the direct supervision of a Pathologist Triage, performs gross description and dissection of all surgical Cytology and Autopsy specimens and accurately dictates the gross description of the specimen received.
  • Perform specialized procedures to include: specimen radiographs, specimen photographs, frozen sections, maintaining and coordinating specimen and records for specialized procedures, research and ancillary studies in consultation with pathologists. Checks the proper submission of pathology specimen. Maintains accession records necessary to confirm specimen identity and ensures correct fixation of the specimen received.
  • Serves as a resource (teaching, demonstrating, instructing on technique) to all technical staff, residents, fellows, Pathologist Assistant Students, and other visiting and rotating staff as needed. Assists the residents, fellows and pathologists with frozen sections.
  • Perform autopsies according to SOP to include gross description, evisceration, organ dissection, and preparation for histological examination
  • Maintenance of surgical grossing area and autopsy area in organized and cleanly manner, ensuring area meets safety and cleanliness standards. Maintains and supports maintenance of equipment and supply inventory. Functions in the capacity of a Professional Pathologist’s Assistant in a busy Pediatric, Academic medical center.
Education Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree Required
  • Bachelor's Degree biological sciences, allied health sciences or related field of study. Preferred
Skills and Abilities
  • Proficiency in computer use, including voice recognition applications, internet and multiple-interfaced systems, Laboratory Information System, Excel, and MS Word or equivalent applications.
  • Knowledge of Photographic equipment.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Certified Cytotechnologist (CT) - The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) - upon hire - Preferred
  • Histotechnician (HT) - The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) - upon hire - Preferred or
  • Histotechnologist (HTL) - The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) - upon hire - Preferred or
  • Immunohistochemistry Certification (IHC) - The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) - upon hire - Preferred or
  • Pathologist's Assistant (PA) - The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) - upon hire - Preferred
