What Is a Pathologist Assistant?
A pathologist assistant is a specialized health care worker who conducts tests on specimen samples and performs surgical autopsies under licensed pathologists. As a pathology assistant, you may work in a research lab, hospital, medical examiner’s office, or you may choose to be self-employed and take on jobs at multiple facilities. You dissect tissue to acquire specimens, such as biopsies, and analyze those samples to help diagnose patients or determine problems within the cells. While you can do the majority of the procedures performed by a pathologist, you are not able to diagnose patients; the pathologist reviews your observations and suggestions and determines a diagnosis.

Job description
Your job is more than a job.
This job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by employees assigned to this department. This is not an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities, and LCMC Health reserves the right to amend and change responsibilities to meet organizational needs as necessary.
GENERAL DUTIES
- Performs and/or assists pathologists in the accessioning, dissection, description, and histologic sampling of a full range of anatomical specimens as well as autopsy techniques.
- Supervises and trains entry level resident physicians in gross room pathology methodology and procedures, under guidance and within protocol parameters provided by medical professional staff.
- Performs frozen sections and other intra-operative consultations, within established protocol and procedural parameters. Coordinates the acquisition of tissue specimens used for research purposes.
- Maintains a file of digital images, ensuring a high standard of specimen photography.
- Participates in the accessioning and labeling of specimens, specimen storage and disposal, and the maintenance of reagents and equipment.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
- Performs effective troubleshooting and problem solving to ensure sample integrity and proper identification of specimens; interacts with stakeholders involved in the acquisition of tissue samples
- Participates in post mortem activities and coordination as needed
EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in a Pathology setting Preferred
EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's degree from an accredited Pathologist Assistant program is required for a Pathology Assistant if not a physician.
- Licensed physician with greater than 5 years' experience in Grossing will be considered in lieu of accredited Pathology Assistant program graduates.
