Job description

Speech Language Pathologist Assistant

An opportunity to inspire, challenge, and empower!

We are currently hiring for a Speech Language Pathologist Assistant for Shelton School District for the 2026-2027 school year. Open until filled.

Interview Process: If selected for an interview, you will be invited to complete an Asynchronous Virtual Interview, which should be completed within 48 hours of the invitation for best consideration. Candidates chosen for a second round interview will participate in an in-person interview.

Schedule: 180 days per school year, 7 hours per day

Location: Itinerant (multiple locations that may change as student need changes).

Salary: $33.91 - $39.68 per hour, depending on experience.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (overtime eligible)

Benefits: 12 sick leave days; health insurance benefits through the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB) including medical, dental, vision, life, and long-term disability insurance. Retirement through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS); other fringe benefits as allowed under School Board Policies and Procedures.

Overview

The Speech Language Pathologist Assistant supports Shelton School District's Strategic Plan and School Improvement Plans by delivering intervention services to students and assisting the SLP in providing educational support for those with speech-language disorders. The assistant implements individualized interventions tailored to each student's unique educational needs and operates under the direct supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist.

Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Attained one of the following:
    • 2 year associate's certification in Speech Language Pathologist Assistant, or
    • Bachelor's Degree in Speech, Language and Hearing or Communication Disorders.
  • Experience as a paraprofessional or working within a school setting preferred.
  • Ability to speak Spanish preferred.
  • Experience and/or training in language and/or articulation therapy, preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people.
  • Ability to pass a Federal criminal background check.
  • Ability and willingness to learn and implement new strategies and techniques.
  • Possession of excellent communication skills including active listening and two-way communication.
  • Ability and willingness to maintain an upbeat, positive, and collaborative demeanor.

Essential Functions
  • Assists in the implementation of program designed by the supervising Speech Language Pathologist to increase students' speech skills.
  • Obtains case histories, completes observation checklists, and tabulates and scores tests.
  • Administer or assist in the administration and scoring of assessment for interpretation by the supervising Speech Language Pathologist.
  • Assist the Speech Language Pathologist during assessment of students or work with parents.
  • Administer and score progress monitoring created or indicated by supervising Speech Language Pathologist.
  • Confers with therapists, teachers, parents, other personnel and/or outside professionals for the purpose of providing requested information.
  • Attends meetings (e.g. IEP conferences, parent meetings, in-services, etc.) for the purpose of providing information regarding students' functional goals.
  • Assists in the preparation of documentation (e.g. evaluations, IEPs, observations, progress, contacts with parents, teachers, and outside professionals, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support for developing recommendations and/or conveying information.
  • Transports students to/from testing or therapy areas.
  • Research resources and methods (e.g. intervention and treatment techniques, assessment tools and methods, community resources, etc.) for the purpose of assisting in the determination of appropriate approach for addressing students' functional goals.
  • Assists with screening students for the purpose of determining the need for further individualized assessment.
  • Develop low-tech AAC materials for students and families.
  • Program augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices.
  • Manages behavior using appropriately designed management techniques.
  • Completes random moments in time studies as required by MAC program guidelines.
  • Arranges the educational setting to maintain a safe and positive environment.
  • Organizes and manages student data and records.
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Confers with teachers, parents and/or appropriate community agency personnel for the purpose of assisting in evaluation of students' progress and/or implementing students' objective.
  • Participates in various meetings for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving one's skills/knowledge.
  • Performs essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
