Patent Agent – Mechanical Engineering (Boston or Washington, D.C.)

Direct Counsel is seeking a Patent Agent with a background in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field to join a highly regarded Am Law firm in either Boston or Washington, D.C. This is an excellent opportunity to work with innovative technologies and help clients strategically protect their intellectual property.

About the Role

The firm’s patent prosecution team partners with clients to secure protection for their most valuable innovations. The group handles all aspects of patent prosecution—from drafting and filing applications to conducting examiner interviews and freedom-to-operate studies—helping clients navigate complex IP landscapes efficiently and effectively.

Key Responsibilities
  • Draft and prosecute patent applications in mechanical, electrical, and computer science disciplines.

  • Conduct prior art searches, analyze patent and scientific literature, and prepare freedom-to-operate and clearance opinions.

  • Respond to USPTO and international office actions, including analyzing references and crafting persuasive arguments.

  • Collaborate with inventors and in-house counsel to understand new technologies and develop tailored patent strategies.

  • Contribute to the development and management of client IP portfolios.

  • Present findings and strategies clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Participate in a collaborative work environment, with approximately 60% in-office participation expected.

Qualifications
