Survey Party Chief – Heavy Civil Construction

Heavy Civil Construction at Whittier Dam, CA

Position Summary

Walker River Construction, Inc. is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Survey Party Chief – Heavy Civil Construction to support the Whittier Dam Project in Whittier, California. This key leadership role will oversee survey operations, maintain project survey control, coordinate with project stakeholders, and ensure the accuracy of construction layout and as-built documentation throughout the life of the project. The successful candidate will work closely with project management, subcontractors, owners, engineers, and construction teams to deliver precise survey services on a complex heavy civil construction project.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Provide professional oversight and management of all project surveying activities.

· Supervise and coordinate surveying subcontractors and field survey personnel.

· Establish, verify, and maintain horizontal and vertical survey control networks.

· Perform and oversee construction staking for earthwork, underground utilities, structures, and related infrastructure.

· Verify line and grade accuracy throughout construction operations.

· Collect, manage, and document as-built survey information in accordance with project specifications and client requirements.

· Support machine control and GPS-guided construction operations.

· Prepare and maintain daily survey reports, field records, and survey documentation.

· Review, update, and maintain AutoCAD as-built drawings and project survey databases.

· Coordinate survey activities with project management, design consultants, owners, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders.

· Conduct quality assurance and quality control reviews to ensure survey accuracy and compliance with applicable standards.

· Assist with existing conditions surveys, topographic surveys, and construction progress documentation.

· Ensure compliance with California surveying laws, regulations, and professional standards.

Required Qualifications

· Minimum 5 years of experience in heavy civil construction surveying.

· Demonstrated experience with GPS/GNSS surveying, total stations, machine control systems, and construction layout.

· Strong understanding of earthwork, grading, underground utilities, and structural construction.

  • Advanced skills in AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, Excel and other engineering related software platforms.

· Strong technical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to read, interpret, and analyze construction plans, specifications, and engineering documents.

· Excellent communication and coordination skills.

· Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Geomatics, or a related field.

· Experience with LiDAR data processing and surface modeling.

· Experience on dam, water resources, or large infrastructure projects.

· Familiarity with drone/UAS survey technologies.
