Position Description Summary

APT Research is hiring a Senior System Safety Engineer in Huntsville, AL or remote to support our MDA MAPSS Safety contract.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and oversees Test and Targets safety programs throughout the system life cycle, including system safety, range safety, operational safety, explosives safety, and insensitive munitions (IM) compliance.
  • Serves as the primary safety interface among Test and Targets Program Offices, contractors, Quality & Safety (QS), Defense Contract Management Agency (DCMA) Safety, Range Safety organizations, the Defense Explosives Safety Board (DDESB), explosives hazard classification authorities, and host installation safety organizations.
  • Conducts safety assessments and technical evaluations in support of Program Change Board (PCB) reviews to identify hazards, assess impacts, and ensure proposed changes comply with safety requirements.
  • Performs system safety risk assessments to identify hazards, evaluate and verify mitigation effectiveness, reduce risks to acceptable levels, and prepare documentation supporting the formal acceptance of residual risk in accordance with DoD, MDA, and MIL-STD-882 requirements.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains system safety requirements, policies, and guidance to minimize risks to personnel, property, mission objectives, and the environment throughout the program life cycle.
  • Leads the reporting, investigation, tracking, and resolution of safety incidents and mishaps, ensuring root cause analyses are completed, corrective actions are implemented, and lessons learned are incorporated to prevent recurrence and improve overall program safety performance.

Required Experience/Education:

  • Bachelors in Engineering with 10+ years of experience in System Safety Engineering OR a Bachelors of Science degree with 15 years of experience in System/Software Safety.

Security Clearance Requirement:

  • A SECRET level clearance

Travel Requirements:

  • Requires ability to travel domestically (within the U.S.) <10%

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires sitting for extended periods of time at a workstation / desk
  • Ability to lift >15 lbs.

Other Essential Functions:

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgement
  • Work attire must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk / hazard to the employee or others
