What is a parttime software engineer?

Part-time software engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain software applications or systems while working fewer hours than the standard full-time schedule, typically less than 35-40 hours per week. They perform similar tasks as full-time engineers, such as coding, debugging, and collaborating with teams, but on a reduced or flexible schedule. Part-time roles may be ideal for students, parents, or those seeking work-life balance, and can be found in a variety of industries and companies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a parttime software engineer?

To thrive as a Part-time Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, a solid grasp of software development principles, and typically a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with development tools like Git, cloud platforms, and frameworks such as React or Django, as well as experience with agile methodologies, are commonly required. Excellent time management, communication, and adaptability are important soft skills, especially when balancing multiple commitments or working remotely. These skills ensure that part-time engineers can deliver high-quality code efficiently and collaborate effectively within teams, despite limited work hours.

How do parttime software engineers typically balance project responsibilities with limited weekly hours?

Part-time software engineers usually coordinate closely with their team leads to define clear, manageable tasks that fit within their available working hours. Regular check-ins, transparent communication, and prioritizing critical features or bug fixes help ensure progress aligns with the overall project timeline. Many teams use agile methodologies and project management tools to help part-time engineers stay integrated and productive. This setup allows for flexibility while maintaining high standards of code quality and collaboration with full-time colleagues.

Job description

We are a certified channel partner for Infinite Campus, the K-12 student information system used by school districts across the country. Our team builds add-on products, custom integrations, and tailored reporting solutions that extend Infinite Campus for the districts we serve. We are hiring two Software Developer Interns to join our team for a 10-12 week summer program. Interns will work alongside our developers on real client-facing projects - supporting Java-based add-ons, writing custom SSRS reports, and manipulating data out of MS SQL Server. What they work on over the summer directly impacts school districts and gets used by the educators and administrators there.

Hourly Rate: $20/hour

What You'll Do:

  • Write and optimize T-SQL queries, stored procedures, and views against MS SQL Server
  • Develop and maintain Java-based add-on products that extend Infinite Campus functionality
  • Write custom reports using SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) based on district requirements
  • Work with senior developers to translate client requests into technical specifications
  • Test, debug, and document your work so it's ready to hand off to clients
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

What You Bring:

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field - recent grads and those graduating soon are encouraged to apply
  • Solid Java fundamentals - classes, interfaces, collections, exception handling
  • Working knowledge of SQL; comfortable writing JOINs, aggregations, and basic stored procedures
  • Strong attention to detail - our clients are school districts, and accuracy in reporting matters
  • Clear written communication for documenting work and interacting with the team
  • A genuine passion for learning - eager to pick up new tools, ask questions, and grow through hands-on work
  • Working conditions: part-time role, 20 hours per week, on-site in Hauppauge, NY; 10-12 week engagement beginning around May 2026
  • Preferred: experience with SSRS or any other reporting tool (Crystal Reports, Power BI, Tableau)
  • Preferred: exposure to MS SQL Server specifically (vs. MySQL/Postgres); familiarity with REST APIs or web services
  • Preferred: any background in or curiosity about K-12 education, edtech, or student information systems; or prior internship, co-op, or substantial personal project experience
