Description:

Under general supervision performs skilled inspection work, litter clean up, and environmental compliance duties at the Municipal Landfills.

Qualifications:

Must be a high school graduate AND have experience in hazardous materials handling and/or solid waste handling operations. Previous landfill experience, hazardous and chemical waste handling, or any Environmental experience relating to chemical and hazardous waste desired. Must have a valid Class D or B Utah Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Must be able to operate a computer and related software. Ability to work in a wide variety of weather conditions. Ability to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with others. Skilled in communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Responsibilities:

Main responsibility is to control wind blow litter at North Valley Landfill, this includes collection of litter around perimeter or landfill and adjacent property's. Assists Landfill Management in monitoring landfill conditions to ensure regulatory permit compliance. Conducts inspections of landfill; Assists in performing quarterly gas sampling, hazardous waste inspections, leachate sampling and management, and storm water sampling and management; Assists in the collection, handling, identification, containment, and storage of waste at the city's Hazardous Waste Storage Facility; Assists in performing public education presentations; Assists the Landfill Manager in all environmental compliance issues. Keeps adequate records in relationship to responsibilities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations pertaining to the handling and disposal of solid and hazardous waste.

Knowledge of the principles of waste screening and hazardous waste recognition and removal.

Knowledge of mathematics and advanced-level chemistry.

Knowledge of tools, personal computer, and analytical equipment used in inspection work.

Knowledge of analytical problem solving methods and techniques.

Experience or demonstrated ability in analytical problem solving.

Ability to recognize and properly identify hazardous waste.

Ability to use field-test equipment and meters.

Ability to perform strenuous work outdoors under various climatic conditions.

Skill in the visual inspection of refuse and hazardous waste materials.

Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with others.

Skill in the use of tools, meters, and equipment used in hazardous waste inspection work.

Skill in communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Skill in operating a personal computer and related software.

Ability to work in wide variety of weather conditions.
