Job description

TITLE: Lead NDT Inspector

REPORTS TO: NDT Examiner, LIII

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

FT / PT STATUS: Full time

LOCATION:Norfolk, VA

SUMMARY

Lead NDT Inspector will direct and provide supervisory oversight of junior level II NDT inspectors, aiding them with technical guidance and on-the-job training as necessary. The lead NDT inspector will also perform VT, UT, MT and PT inspections on surface ship and submarine structure/ piping. Required to perform miscellaneous tasks, as assigned by his or her NDT Examiner.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide advanced training to both junior and journeyman NDT inspectors for NDT inspections as well as other typical duties such as Test and Inspection Plan management
  • Junior NDT inspectors in the region will report to Lead NDT
  • Act as deck plate subject matter expert on NDT for various projects
  • Review technical work instructions for accuracy and completeness prior to assigning NDT tasks
  • Assist in resolving quality issues in region
  • Identify areas of improvement for NDT and Quality Assurance procedures and as they ari Review NDT inspectors? Objective Quality Evidence prior to submittal
  • Ensure attention to detail is paramount amongst all inspectors
  • Perform periodic surveillances on trade workers (welders / fitters) as well as NDT inspectors to establish trends and combat non-conformance
  • Perform most complicated VT MT PT, and UT processes with an emphasis on training junior inspectors
  • Perform basic VT, MT, PT and UT inspections as workload demands
  • Act as liaison between Test Examiners and projects as needed
  • Ensure projects have NDT resources needed
  • Ensure NDT equipment on job sites is in good working order and calibrated as required
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

  • Direction and oversight of fellow NDT Inspectors
  • Must be able to deliver simple to complex instructions to inspectors in a manner that they can follow accurately.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & ATTRIBUTES

  • Have knowledge of welding joint design and joint fit up requirements
  • Ability to follow instructions given both verbally and in written form
  • Willingness to learn and work to the best of his/her abilities and have a dependable work ethic
  • Ability to read and interpret documents furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form including but not limited to safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, quality manuals and procedure manuals
  • Familiarity with the metric system

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school graduate, or GED
  • Qualified NDT Level II inspector IAW NAVSEA requirements in Tech pub 271
  • Experience with SMAW, GTAW and GMAW welding highly preferred
  • 5+ years of NAVSEA NDT certification in the following methods: Visual testing, liquid penetrant testing, magnetic particle testing, ultrasonic thickness testing and ultrasonic shearwave testing
  • Previous leadership or management experience preferred but not required.

WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Regularly required to walk; frequently required to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance, or crawl at various heights and in confined spaces; occasionally required to sit; required to reach with hands and arms, use hands to feel, grip, or handle; regularly required to safely lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; required use of vision to see up close, distance, and peripherally, as well as depth perception and ability to adjust focus in low light conditions. May be required to wear a respirator to safely perform assigned tasks.
  • Ability to successfully pass near vision acuity and color discrimination examinations, with or without the use of corrective lenses (glasses or contact lenses), is required.
  • Must be able to deliver simple to complex instructions to inspectors in a manner that they can follow accurately.
  • Willing to work 40+ hours a week
