Job description

Hours: 25 hours per week

Pay: $18.00 per hour

Reports to: Executive Director

Application deadline: August 31, 2026

Who We Are

Uptown & Boogie Healthy Project, Inc. (UBHP) promotes health equity by providing communities in Upper Manhattan and the Bronx access to nutritious food, wellness resources, and educational opportunities. We operate weekly farmers markets, a CSA, a farm stand, youth programming, and culinary education. Our programs empower individuals and families to lead healthier lives.

The Role

The Farmers Market Manager runs the day-to-day operation of both of our weekend farmers markets through the fall season — Uptown Good Food in Harlem on Saturdays and Bronx Park East in the Bronx on Sundays. You are the person vendors, customers, and community partners look to on market day. You will manage vendors and stall assignments, operate the market manager's booth and its nutrition benefit programs, keep each site safe and clean, and represent the markets to the public.

This role also carries a real marketing component. You will take photos at market, distribute flyers in the surrounding neighborhoods, and help us grow attendance week over week.

Both weekend days are required. This is a weekend-anchored position: you will run the Harlem market on Saturday and the Bronx market on Sunday. Shift times include market setup and teardown.

Thursday is a non-market day used for vendor follow-up, supply pickup, flyer distribution, and market prep. In November, market hours shorten seasonally and the weekday shift may adjust; total weekly hours remain approximately 25.

What You'll Do

Vendor and Market Operations

  • Enroll farmers and vendors in the market through seasonal vendor agreements or as daily vendors
  • Assign and place vendors in stalls, including day-of placement for daily vendors
  • Collect all stall fees owed and maintain accurate accounting of payments received
  • Arrive before vendors and remain on-site through the full market day
  • Set out market signs and parking signs
  • Ensure all market rules and all applicable state and city regulations are followed
  • Maintain the market grounds safely and cleanly, and ensure the site is clean after vendors leave
  • Maintain the database of vendors, contact information, and any licenses or permits required for the products they sell

Market Manager's Booth and Nutrition Programs

  • Operate the market manager's booth throughout market hours
  • Administer the SNAP/EBT program, Health Bucks, and the Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (FMNP), including accurate daily token and coupon reconciliation
  • Distribute nutrition education materials and seasonal recipes

Marketing and Community Engagement

  • Take photos and short video at market for use on social media, newsletters, and grant reporting
  • Distribute flyers and promotional materials in the surrounding neighborhoods to drive attendance
  • Greet customers, answer questions, and provide consistently strong customer service
  • Conduct periodic customer counts each market day to track market growth
  • Build relationships with neighbors, community organizations, and local partners

Communication and Reporting

  • Answer questions from vendors and customers and resolve disputes as they arise
  • Communicate market policies, activities, and schedule changes to vendors throughout the season
  • Bring vendor feedback and suggestions back to UBHP leadership
  • Submit accurate weekly market reports, including attendance, sales, and benefit redemption figures

What We're Looking For

Required

  • Strong customer service skills and a professional, friendly presence with vendors, customers, and community members
  • Comfortable taking photos at market and distributing flyers in the community
  • Reliable and punctual, with the ability to open the market before vendors arrive
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly with cash handling and benefit token reconciliation
  • Good communication skills and the ability to resolve disputes calmly
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently on market day
  • Available for the full schedule listed above — both Saturdays and Sundays are required, and this position cannot be shared or split

Preferred

  • Prior experience with farmers markets, retail, food service, or event operations
  • Familiarity with SNAP/EBT, Health Bucks, or FMNP
  • Comfort with basic technology (tablet-based data entry, spreadsheets, smartphone photography)
  • Basic budgeting or financial recordkeeping knowledge
  • Spanish, or Bengali language skills
  • Connection to or knowledge of the Harlem and Bronx communities

Physical Requirements

This is an outdoor, physically active role. You should be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds (tables, tents, signage, market equipment), stand and walk for extended periods, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, and rain.

What You'll Gain

  • Hands-on experience running market operations from vendor management through financial reporting
  • Direct experience administering federal and city nutrition benefit programs
  • A working network among local farmers, food producers, and community organizations
  • Transferable skills in operations, marketing, dispute resolution, and community engagement
  • Potential for continued involvement with UBHP through future seasons, project work, or paid positions
