Saint Louis Science Center

Job Title: Security Officer

Department: Security

Reports To: Security Supervisor

FLSA/Status: Part-time, non-exempt

SUMMARY:

The Security Officer's role is to serve and protect the guests, employees, property, and assets of the Saint Louis Science Center. Able to remain calm, take appropriate action, and maintain a professional and impartial stance in all safety, security, and /or disaster situations encountered. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

(This is not an all-inclusive list, and the duties can change or be modified, as needed per Science Center Leadership)

  • Patrol  all assigned areas inside and outside the Science Center campus, on foot      or vehicle.
  • To  observe, address safety/security issues, investigate and report activities      to maintain order and protect guests, staff, and property, physically detain individuals, as necessary. 
  • Maintain  a visible presence while serving an assigned post or patrol.
  • Knowledge of the Saint Louis Science Centers' physical layout. 
  • Knowledge of the Security Manual, and all security policies and procedures.
  • Actively  assist and direct guests and staff in way finding, inside or outside the      building or within the parking lot. 
  • Screen  visitors and staff as they enter and leave the building. 
    • Without  distraction from security duties, greet guests with a welcoming smile and  converse with them at every opportunity. Their knowledge of your interest  in them will make them feel welcome and more secure, enhancing their  experience.
  • Respond to emergency situations such as fire, building evacuation, illness,  injuries, crimes, natural or man-made disasters, threats, dangerous or  confrontational individuals. 
  • Operate all emergency service equipment, including firefighting and first aid  equipment.
  • Perform  emergency first aid, CPR, and use of an AED in the absence of an EMT.
  • Able  to use a computer. 
  • Have reliable transportation to and from work.
  • Perform  control room operations:
    • Fire  and security alarm monitoring
    • Operating  digital CCTV
    • Operating the badge system
    • Answering the security radio and dispatching officers to reported areas. 
    • Answering  the control room telephone
    • Noting dispatch entries within the dispatching software
  • Prepare timely and detailed incident reports within the reporting software.
  • Provide escorts for staff and guests when requested.
  • Present a neat, clean professional appearance.
  • Operate and maintain all security personal equipment.
  • Safely operate and maintain the security vehicle and complete a vehicle log  daily.
  • Any other duties assigned or requested by the Director, Manager and Security Supervisors, or Science Center leadership staff.

Day shift

Evening shift

After hour and overnight events

Emergency calls/events

Call off/sick/shortage of officers

QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to communicate effectively in English, orally, and in writing. 

EXPERIENCE:

At least two years' experience in security or related employment desired. (Security, law enforcement, or military experience). 

EDUCATION:

High school diploma or GED equivalent; college preferred. 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Certificates in CPR, AED and First Aid preferred.

Current Private security officer license from Saint Louis County or St. Louis City preferred.

Valid driver's license 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Moderate physical activity is required. The officer will be required to stand, sit, walk, climb stairs or ride throughout each shift. 

Lift or move equipment.

Place a person, at least 100 pounds, in a wheelchair.

Physically detain an uncooperative individual safely.

Lift a child (50-75 pounds) and carry to a rescue.

Lift and operate safely a 20-pound portable fire extinguisher.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Security posts are inside and outside of several buildings. Officers must work year-round in all types of weather that can last the entire scheduled shift.  Security posts require coverage seven days a week, including holidays, weekends, and occasionally overnight.
