Job description

Job Summary
The University of Michigan-Flint's Intercultural Center (ICC) is a welcoming space for all students that centers on the needs and experiences of people of color and other marginalized people within its walls and throughout campus. Interns will support the ICC by developing, organizing, and implementing programming that fosters social justice, multicultural awareness, and inclusive campus engagement. Working collaboratively with ICC professional staff and fellow interns, interns will help plan signature events such as the Intercultural Cookout, Intercultural Cafe, and Dine and Dialogue series. Responsibilities include creating proposals for multicultural programs, facilitating diversity workshops, engaging in campus outreach, and promoting ICC initiatives at major university events. Applicants should be full-time UM-Flint students in good academic standing who are passionate about social justice.
Responsibilities*
  • Meet regularly with ICC Professional Staff to create, organize, and execute annual ICC programs such as Intercultural Cookout, Intercultural Cafe, Dine and Dialogue, etc.
  • Completes the Program Proposal for multicultural programming centered on social justice and intercultural understanding under the supervision of the Director and in collaboration with entire intern team. Present Program Proposal to the ICC leadership for approval during bi-weekly staff meetings.
  • Create forum and dialogue sessions that relate to issues of race, class, gender , and a variety of multicultural identities for Dine and Dialogue series
  • Work closely with entire intern's team to promote during opening year events such as Maize & Blue Days, Mgagement, Intercultural Cookout, and other opening weekend events.
  • Recruits students, organizations, and departments to participate in ICC programming through tabling & flyering throughout the school year.
  • Facilitate and present the ICC diversity workshops, with a professional staff member, to courses, students, leaders, faculty, staff and Flint community members.
  • Serve as a ICC team member, participating in regular staff meetings, training, and office events, and supporting office functions by attending all programs for which there are no academic conflicts
  • Meet one-on-one with your supervisor bi-weekly (minimum) in order to effectively balance academics, personal and ICC obligations
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications*
  • Currently enrolled as a full-time UM Flint student in good academic standing.
  • Passion for community involvement, social justice, a willingness to build relationships with campus and community partners, the ability to motivate peers to accomplish a common vision, and knowledge of goal setting and strategic planning methods.
  • Ability to work independently (as a motivated self-starter) or in teams
  • Have an understanding of Google Suite and Microsoft Office programs: Word, Publisher, Excel, etc.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Previous experience with programming, promotion and marketing and event planning
  • Knowledge of the Adobe Suite of programs (Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign)
  • Academic background and/or interest in higher education student affairs, multicultural affairs, antiracist education and/or social justice
  • Work-study students encouraged to apply

Modes of Work
Hybrid
The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.
