Responsibilities

The Water Reclamation Plant Operator I responsibilities involves working as part of a team to operate, monitor, service, and clean a wide range of specialized equipment in a large, complex Water Reclamation Facility. Operators are responsible for all stages of wastewater treatment, including primary, secondary, advanced, tertiary, disinfection and cogeneration processes.\r\n\r\n\r\nThe role includes operating and monitoring plant equipment such as pumps, valves, filters, chemical feed systems, digesters and cogeneration units. Operators conduct routine sampling, testing, and data collection to monitor water quality and process conditions, and they take corrective actions when necessary. They perform minor maintenance and cleaning of equipment and facilities, while more complex repairs are handled by specialized maintenance personnel.\r\n\r\n\r\nAdditional duties include assisting with the training of new staff, following assignments from supervisors or Water Reclamation Plant Operator II(s), and ensuring compliance with operational procedures. When not performing shift operations, the operator may carry out basic grounds maintenance such as mowing and snow removal. Accurate recordkeeping of plant operations, equipment status, and maintenance activities is also a key part of the job.\r\n\r\n\r\nWork is performed independently or in collaboration with other team members, with the goal of ensuring the safe, reliable, and continuous operation of the Water Reclamation Facility.\r\n\r\n

Minimum Qualifications

Education\r\n\r\nGraduation from high school (or G.E.D.)\r\n\r\n\r\nExperience\r\nMust meet one of the following:\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Must have one year of experience in the maintenance of mechanical equipment; OR\r\n \r\n Successful completion of the Operator Training Committee of Ohio (OTCO) Basic Wastewater Operator's course. A copy of the course certificate must be presented at time of appointment.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

License Requirements

Must possess a valid driver's license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment. A valid Ohio Class B commercial driver's license is preferred at time of appointment. Out of state residents must have a valid license from their issuing state at time of appointment and maintain said license as a condition of continued employment until an Ohio license can be obtained.\r\n\r\n\r\nIncumbents hired without a Class B license will be required within 150 days of appointment, to obtain and maintain a valid Ohio Class A Commercial Driver's License (C.D.L.), including the qualification to operate a vehicle with air brakes and any other endorsements required by the State of Ohio.\r\n\r\n

Special Requirements

Must obtain and maintain an Ohio EPA Water Reclamation Operator I license within 24 months of appointment as a term and condition of continued employment.\r\n

Promotional Qualifications

Must be a full-time permanent or part-time permanent employee in pay grade 118 (Wage) or below, pay grade 29 (Clerical) or below, or equivalent and been employed for 6 consecutive months by the City of Dayton in a classified Civil Service position. Identical scores will be broken by (1) seniority and (2) random selection method.\r\n

Examination dates and times are subject to change. Calculators will be provided for the Civil Service examination. Applicants appearing on the Promotional eligible list shall be considered for appointment prior to those on the Open Competitive list. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, demotion, etc. into a classified position.\r\n\r\n\r\nDrug and Nicotine Testing\r\nFinal appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment.
