What is a part time vet tech?

Part time vet techs are veterinary technicians who work less than a standard full-time schedule, often providing support to veterinarians and assisting with animal care, medical procedures, laboratory tests, and client communications. They perform many of the same duties as full-time vet techs, such as monitoring anesthesia, administering medications, and collecting samples, but work fewer hours per week. Part time positions can offer flexibility for those balancing other commitments, such as school or family, while still allowing them to gain experience in animal healthcare.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time vet tech?

To thrive as a Part Time Vet Tech, you need a solid understanding of animal care, basic medical procedures, and typically a veterinary technician certification or associate degree. Familiarity with veterinary practice management software, lab equipment, and diagnostic tools is important. Strong communication, compassion, and attention to detail help you effectively support veterinarians and reassure pet owners. These skills ensure safe, efficient care for animals and positive experiences for clients in a busy clinical environment.

What are some common challenges faced by part time vet techs, and how can they be managed?

Part-time vet techs often face the challenge of staying up-to-date with protocols and patient cases due to working fewer hours. This can make it harder to maintain continuity and keep pace with rapidly changing priorities in a busy clinic. To manage this, effective communication with full-time staff and thorough handovers are essential. Many part-time techs find success by setting aside time to review patient notes before their shifts and proactively engaging with the team to stay informed about ongoing cases.

What is a good second job for a part time vet tech?

A part-time vet tech can consider roles such as pet groomer, pet sitter, or dog walker, which align with their animal care skills. Other options include working at pet stores, animal shelters, or offering pet training services, often with flexible hours to complement their veterinary job.

Job description

You love dogs.
I don’t mean you “like dogs” or feel that dogs are “fine, I guess.” No, I mean you LOVE dogs. To you, dogs are the greatest things in the world. You probably like most dogs better than you like most people. You’ve said the phrase “Can I pet your dog?” to more strangers than you could possibly count.
You believe that dogs make life better.
Are you looking to begin a new career involving dogs? Are you ready to learn more about body language, play styles and dog behavior? Are you thinking about going to Vet Tech or Vet assistant school? If you answered yes to any of these, then this is the job for you!
Dogtopia Milwaukee East Side has an opening for an energetic, organized, dog loving individual that will be responsible for managing and maintaining a safe playroom environment for our furry friends.
If all that sounds like you, we should talk. We’re looking for exceptional dog lovers to become Canine Coaches at our brand-new Milwaukee East Side location. We have availability for both our morning and our afternoon/evening shifts. We’ll provide all the training, which is extensive. You provide:
Consistent and timely attendance
A friendly attitude
Attention to detail
A willingness to work hard, improve, and pitch in for the team
The ability to spend 70% of the time standing
The love, affection, play, caring, and romping for our four-legged friends!
A willingness to always keep our environment clean and safe, this is a team effort!
Commitment to take part and complete Dogtopia’s training program
Your role is to care for all our dogs as if they are family…because they are. You’ll work in air-conditioned, indoor playrooms, and once you become a part of our Dogtopia team, you can bring your dog to work with you, too.
Successful team members are always aware of their environment and consistently attend to the ever-changing pack environment and special needs of each dog. This position requires a high level of responsibility as we are caring for the lives of animals and monitoring and maintaining a safe environment. This is a dirty job and HARD work which requires being self-sufficient and the ability to maintain vigil without human interaction for long periods of time.
A Day in the Life:
Engage, interact, and enjoy the dogs
Caring for all dogs as if they were your own
Maintain control of large groups of dogs (when its large play time) and make good judgement calls when you see any furry bad behavior.

You will be on your feet showing dogs attention and care to ensure that they are abiding you as the pack leader in the room

Engaging with customers from time to time and making sure you SMILE for the camera
Cleaning, cleaning, cleaning. Lots of dogs means lots of cleaning.
We must emphasize this is a physical job! It requires hard work, daily cleaning, refilling water coolers, doing laundry and taking out the trash. No one (even the owner) are above these tasks. We all pitch in to keep a smooth operation running for our customers. We are committed to maintaining strict safety and health procedures including the proper handling of dog safe chemicals.
These part-time and full-time positions have a built-in pay raise structure. For the right person, there is also room to grow into higher positions, compensation, and benefits.
