What does a part time stylist do?

A Part Time Stylist helps clients select clothing and accessories that fit their style, body type, and the occasion, usually working in a retail or salon setting. They offer fashion advice, recommend outfits, and ensure that customers have a positive shopping experience. Since the job is part-time, stylists typically work flexible hours, which may include evenings and weekends. Their responsibilities can also include maintaining displays, keeping up with fashion trends, and handling customer service tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time stylist?

To thrive as a Part Time Stylist, you need a solid understanding of fashion trends, garment fitting, and customer service, often supported by prior retail or styling experience. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory management software, and basic scheduling tools is typically required. Strong communication, creativity, and adaptability help stylists build rapport with clients and personalize recommendations. These skills ensure client satisfaction, effective sales, and ongoing customer loyalty in a dynamic retail environment.

What are the typical responsibilities of a part time stylist during a shift?

As a Part Time Stylist, your daily responsibilities often include assisting customers with wardrobe selections, offering personalized fashion advice, maintaining the visual appearance of the sales floor, and keeping up with inventory organization. You may also be involved in processing transactions and collaborating with other team members to achieve sales goals. Since shifts can vary, flexibility and strong communication skills are important for adapting to different customer needs and store priorities.

What is the difference between Part Time Stylist vs Full Time Stylist?

AspectPart Time StylistFull Time Stylist
Work HoursFewer hours, typically less than 30 hours/weekFull schedule, usually 35-40 hours/week
CredentialsRequired cosmetology license, similar to full-time stylistsSame licensing requirements as part-time stylists
Work EnvironmentSalon or spa, similar to full-time rolesSame as part-time, often in the same settings
CompensationHourly or commission-based, proportional to hours workedHigher overall earnings due to longer hours

Both part-time and full-time stylists require cosmetology licenses and work in similar salon environments. The main difference lies in hours worked and earnings potential, with full-time stylists working more hours and earning more overall. The choice depends on your availability and career goals.

How to become a part time stylist with no experience?

To become a part-time stylist with no experience, focus on developing basic customer service and communication skills, and consider taking short courses in fashion or styling. Many salons and retail stores offer on-the-job training, so applying to entry-level positions can provide practical experience. Building a portfolio or gaining knowledge of current trends can also improve your chances of securing a part-time styling role.

How to become a part time stylist?

To become a part-time stylist, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent and relevant training or experience in hairstyling, fashion, or beauty services. Many employers require a cosmetology license or certification, and strong communication and customer service skills are important for success in a flexible, part-time role.

How to get hired as a part time stylist?

To get hired as a part-time stylist, applicants should have relevant fashion or beauty experience, strong customer service skills, and a professional appearance. Applying to salons, boutiques, or retail stores that offer styling services, and demonstrating flexibility with scheduling, can improve chances of employment. Smithfield, RI

Full-time, Part-time

Job description

Practice:
Sit Still Kids Salon
Locations:
Smithfield, RI and East Greenwich, RI (On-Site; specific location discussed at interview)
Schedule:
Closed Tuesdays | At least one weekend day required | Most coverage needed afternoons and weekends
Compensation:
$16-$18/hr + tips + 10% product commission
Employment:
Full-Time or Part-Time | Hourly (W2) | On-Site

You are paid your full hourly rate for every scheduled hour, whether the chair is full or not. You keep your tips, earn 10% on product sales, and Sunday hours pay time-and-a-half under Rhode Island law. The clientele is built in from day one, there is no book to build, and there are no late nights.

About This Practice

Sit Still Kids Salon is a franchise brand built around making the salon experience genuinely enjoyable for kids and their families. The Rhode Island locations in Smithfield and East Greenwich are owned and actively operated by a hands-on franchisee who is invested in building a team that stays. These locations are small and personal. The owner is present, the team is small, and when you show up, it matters.

The Role

We are hiring stylists for both Smithfield and East Greenwich. About 70% of our services are clipper cuts and short cuts. That is what our guests book most and what keeps the floor moving. We need stylists who are confident with clippers, comfortable across all hair types, and good with kids. If you are a few years out of school and have been working in a volume salon environment, this will feel familiar from day one.

What You Will Do

  • Deliver clipper cuts, short cuts, and full-range styling services for children across all hair types and ages
  • Create a calm, positive experience for kids and parents; the service starts before scissors do
  • Execute cuts efficiently within BLVD booking system time formats
  • Recommend and sell products based on individual client needs (10% commission on all product sales)
  • Maintain a clean, organized station and contribute to the salon floor between appointments

Requirements

Must-Haves

  • Active Rhode Island cosmetology license (required; Massachusetts and other out-of-state licenses do not qualify)
  • Minimum 2 years of professional experience post-cosmetology school
  • Confident with clipper cuts across all hair types, which make up the majority of our service menu
  • Availability for at least one weekend day (Saturday or Sunday) every week

Strong Advantage

  • Experience in a high-volume franchise or chain salon (Supercuts, Great Clips, or Sport Clips alumni are a great fit)
  • Prior experience with children's salon services or family clientele
  • Comfortable working afternoons, open to both Saturday and Sunday availability
  • Interest in taking on additional responsibility over time, with a Lead Stylist path available

Benefits

Why This Role

  • Built-in clientele from day one, with no book-building required
  • You get paid whether the chair is full or not. Your hourly rate applies during the entire shift, not only when you are cutting
  • Great hours with no late nights, and a built-in midweek day off with the salon closed Tuesdays
  • Genuine pathway to Lead Stylist for the right candidate
  • Small, supportive team with an owner who is in the building

Compensation & Schedule

Pay: $16-$18/hr based on experience, plus tips on all services and 10% commission on product sales. Sunday hours are paid at time-and-a-half per Rhode Island law for hourly employees.

Schedule: Salon hours are Mon and Wed-Fri 10:00 AM-6:00 PM, Sat 9:00 AM-5:00 PM, Sun 10:00 AM-5:00 PM. Closed Tuesdays. Opening and closing shifts are available on weekdays. At least one weekend day is required for all stylists. We currently need the most coverage in the afternoons and on weekends.
