POSITION DUTIES:

  • In collaboration with the patient, the primary care physician/midwife and other health care providers, perform surgical preparation/scrub/circulating/post anesthesia roles for obstetrical procedures. Prepare the patient for the surgical procedure, start an intravenous and administer medication according to physician's orders, complete the nursing admission form and transport the woman to the OR area prior to surgery.
  • Coordinate the in-hospital experience in collaboration with the patient, family and the physician/midwifery team. 
  • Create a therapeutic perinatal environment by providing patient/family teaching and counselling, with a focus on the surgical experience and early post-operative period as well as newborn care, parenting, health promotion, and perinatal loss when appropriate.  Utilizes the nursing process and the CRNS Standards of Nursing Practice and ORNAC standards to provide nursing care.
  • Provides emergency care for the surgical patient/fetus/newborn in crisis, while obtaining immediate assistance from the physician or nursing colleagues. 
  • Provides obstetrical care to the patient and fetal health surveillance throughout labor and delivery 
  • Evaluate outcome of care on continuing basis by ongoing assessments. Provide and then modify the care plan accordingly. Act as a patient advocate.
  • Provide guidance and/or direction by precepting new orientees or students and providing care to patients and their families.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience: 

  • Two years in Labor and Delivery

 Education: 

  • Graduated from an approved Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN.
  • AORN Certification.
  • Fetal Health Assessment Certification.
  • Current CPR /Newborn Resuscitation Certification.
  • Breastfeeding update, minimum 6 hours in the last 2 years.
  • Perinatal loss education, minimum 4 hours

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Able to apply and evaluate maternal/fetal/newborn nursing theory and expertise.
  • Able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Able to cope with multiple tasks for a variety of patients.
  • Able to triage patients, and to prioritize and organize work.
  • Ability to deal with and promote change.
  • Ability to operate related equipment in the maternal services unit and the maternal operating room.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
