Description
Do you have great customer service skills, know how to use a personal computer, and can understand the importance of serving our member libraries efficiently and effectively? If so, then we have a position for you!
Illinois Heartland Library System (IHLS) seeks a part-time Sorter for our hub in Champaign, IL. Sorters are key to IHLS's mission to help our member libraries provide quality services that include the sharing of resources. These resources include library books as well as a wide variety of other materials that enrich the lives of patrons. It might be the extra fishing pole that lets a child spend a day at the lake with a grandparent, the sewing machine used to finish a prom dress, or the blood pressure cuff, stand mixer, power drill, and other items shared throughout our library communities.
This part-time Day Shift position is scheduled to work up to 19 hours a week. The shift is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday during the day, though schedules could fluctuate as business needs change . Pay is $15.64 per hour.
Summary:
In this position, you will assist in the daily sorting of books and other materials that IHLS transports between member libraries. You also will help prepare the delivery tubs and bags, shelve IHLS books, and perform other clerical duties. This is a hands-on role where you'll regularly lift, carry, push, or pull items weighing up to 40 pounds.
Requirements
Minimum Education and Experience:
  • High school graduate or GED equivalent.
  • High school students (with approved IHLS workforce program).
  • Experience working in a library is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to sort, read, and recognize library names and location codes.
  • Personal computer use and general knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
  • Time management and work independently on occasion.
  • Ability to be detail oriented.
  • Use professional communication.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with IHLS staff.
  • Display professional business attitude with a pleasant demeanor while working in a customer service-oriented organization.

Physical Requirements:
  • Repetitive use of arms and legs and moving the whole body such as standing, climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, reaching, pushing, grasping, hearing, and talking.
  • Ability to shelve materials up to a height of 6 feet and/or bending to ground-level while sorting items by library code.
  • Ability to exert up to 40 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including but not limited to, books, tubs, or bags of library materials.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Sorting is performed in person in an office environment.
