What is a part time sitter?

A part time sitter is someone who provides care and supervision for children, pets, or occasionally elderly individuals on a part-time basis. This means they typically work flexible hours rather than full-time, and may be hired for after-school care, evenings, weekends, or specific occasions. Part time sitters are responsible for ensuring safety, preparing simple meals, engaging in activities, and sometimes light housekeeping, depending on the family's needs. The position is ideal for those seeking flexible work schedules or supplemental income.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time sitter?

To thrive as a Part Time Sitter, you need basic caregiving knowledge, reliability, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with communication tools, scheduling apps, and sometimes basic first aid certification are typically expected. Patience, trustworthiness, and strong interpersonal skills help build rapport with clients and those under your care. These skills ensure safety, foster trust, and create a positive environment for those being looked after.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time sitters and how can they be managed?

Part-time sitters often face challenges such as adjusting to irregular schedules, quickly building rapport with new families, and managing multiple responsibilities like meal prep and homework help within limited hours. To manage these challenges, effective communication with families about expectations and schedules is key. Developing flexible routines, staying organized, and being proactive in addressing any concerns with parents can help create a positive and productive environment for both the sitter and the children.

Part Time Sitting and Babysitting are closely related roles in childcare. While both involve caring for children, Part Time Sitting often includes a broader range of settings and may require additional certifications, especially for longer or more specialized assignments. Babysitting typically refers to short-term, in-home care for children, often on a casual basis. Understanding these differences helps job seekers find the right opportunity based on credentials, work environment, and employer expectations.

Job description

About the Job:
Hey there! I’m Ken, founder of kenwalksdogs.com, and we’re looking for Part-Time Dog Walkers and Overnight Pet Sitters to join our fun-loving, long-standing team!
This is a true W2 employee role (not 1099 contracting). Training starts at $15+ per hour, with the chance to earn commission and bonuses for last-minute or on-demand walk requests. After 90 days, you’ll also receive an automatic raise.

Why This Job Rocks:
If you’ve ever dreamed of a job where every day is an adventure, this is it. You’ll spend your time exploring Austin (one of the coolest cities in the world!) while building friendships with incredible dogs and their people.
We’re super mindful of the Texas heat—keeping dogs safe and cool is always our top priority. On long, hot days, we plan dog-friendly indoor adventures to keep both pups and humans comfortable and safe.
Our pack also enjoys a lineup of exciting, creative activities, including:
  • Swimming lessons & puppy pool parties.
  • Portraits in the park.
  • Product demos & dog-friendly events.
  • State park visits & nature hikes.
  • Special events for our human clients (because they deserve treats, too!).

Who We’re Looking For:
Our ideal teammates are:
  • PASSIONATE about dogs and delight in every tail wag.
  • SAFETY-FIRST—always alert to health, hydration, and well-being.
  • TEAM-MINDED—quick to step up and help when needed.
  • DETAIL-ORIENTED—executing tasks with urgency and precision.
  • RESILIENT OUTDOORS—able to thrive in Texas weather.
  • PEOPLE-SAVVY—connecting easily with pet parents and building trust.
What You’ll Do:
Daily assignments come through our mobile app (“Ken Walks Dogs” on the App Store). You’ll cover everything from quick potty breaks to adventurous field trips and neighborhood strolls. Along the way, you’ll:
  • Provide real-time updates, GPS-tracked route maps, and Instagram-worthy pics & videos.
  • Rotate between roles: dog walking, pet sitting, pet taxi, event hosting, and training support.
  • Keep every day unique while expanding your skill set in the pet care industry.
Overnight Pet Sitting & Boarding:
Pet sitters join our client dogs in their own homes for cozy sleepovers. All client homes are vetted by us—safe, clean, and comfortable is guaranteed. This role is perfect if you’d like to:
  • Get paid while studying, working remotely, or simply relaxing with pets.
  • Snuggle up with the coolest cats and dogs in Austin for the night.
Many pups are also open to boarding in staff homes. We’re happy to discuss whether boarding could be the right fit for you and our client dogs!
Our Culture:
  • At Ken Walks Dogs, people stick around—most of our walkers and sitters have been with us for atleast 2+ years.
  • Have a friendly dog of your own? Here, every day is take-your-dog-to-work day. Over time, we thoughtfully pair staff dogs with compatible, like-minded pup friends.
  • This job is awesome for someone who values independence and self-management, while still following our reporting processes to keep our team (and dog parents) in the loop in real time.
This truly is an amazing way to:
  • Get paid to be outdoors and in nature.
  • Bond with all types of dogs.
  • Build valuable skills in the pet industry.
Benefits & Perks:
We’ve got your back with:
  • Guaranteed pay for scheduled shifts (even with last-minute cancellations).
  • Paid training from day one.
  • Mileage reimbursement (non-taxed income for using your vehicle).
  • Commercial auto insurance coverage while you’re on the job.
  • Workers’ comp insurance for peace of mind when it comes to your personal safety.
  • Free gear (leashes, seat covers, treats, waste bags, etc.)
  • Bonus opportunities during holidays, events, and on-demand shifts.
  • Discounted pet care—your pets deserve the best, too!
Requirements to Join:
  • Pass a background check (criminal + driving record).
  • Reliable, insured vehicle (room for at least one pup, ideally two).
  • Smartphone with a great camera.
  • Hands-on experience with dogs (fostering, volunteering, sitting, etc.).
Hours & Availability:
We’re hiring for any combination of the following shifts:
Dog Walking Shifts:
Mon–Fri: 8am-12pm, 9am-1pm, or 10am-2pm

Overnight Pet Sitting:
Sleepovers in client homes (safe, vetted, comfortable) or boarding in staff homes when appropriate.
Since 2018, we’ve proudly served South-Central Austin, expanding to the greater Austin area in 2022. Most clients live nearby, though occasional 15-30 minute drives may be needed (get paid to drive in the A/C and listen to podcasts!) Travel time is always paid, and mileage is reimbursed weekly.
