As a Substitute School Bus Driver, you will play an essential role in helping students arrive at school and return home safely. You may also support field trips, athletic events, school activities, and other District transportation needs.

Position Overview
Under the supervision of the Director of Transportation, the Substitute School Bus Driver safely transports students to and from school, field trips, activities, and other authorized locations.
Drivers must safely operate a school bus on a variety of roads and in changing traffic and weather conditions, including mountainous and narrow roadways. Substitute drivers are also responsible for maintaining student safety, following established schedules, completing required vehicle inspections, and enforcing District bus rules.

Job Title: BUS DRIVER Range 23
Position Purpose:
To transport students to and from school, on field trips and other sites within designated route(s) and to ensure the safety of the student passengers while riding in a school bus. Employees in this classification receive general supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures. This job class is responsible for the safe operation of a 10-speed school bus over mountainous and narrow roads and for ensuring the safety of student passengers while meeting established bus schedules.
Supervisor: Director of Transportation
Essential Job Duties:
The following tasks are essential for this position. Incumbents in this classification may not perform all of these tasks, or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.
1. Drives a 10-speed school bus or other transportation vehicle within a prescribed route(s) in accordance with time schedules; picking up and discharging students at designed stops.
2. Escorts students across streets using the bus flashing red lights signal.
3. Transports students and teachers on field trips to various locations; planning necessary route(s) and stops as needed.
4. Maintains order and proper discipline of student passengers according to District policy; enforces bus riding rules.
5. Issues written bus citations to students and communicates directly with parents regarding bus discipline problems.
6. Conducts safety and operational inspections of assigned bus daily prior to starting route.
7. Reports needed mechanical repairs when necessary.
8. Services buses with gas, diesel fuel and oil; checks and fills tires and batteries.
9. Performs periodic safety drills as required by law; completing necessary reports upon request.
10. Maintains cleanliness of vehicle to ensure safe operating condition.
11. Completes mileage and other reports including passenger counts.
12. Adheres as closely as possible to established schedule of bus stop arrival and departure times.
13. Attends driver training programs to maintain current knowledge of California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code as it applies to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of school children.
14. Operates a two-way radio.
15. Chains bus when road conditions deem it necessary.
16. Washes bus as needed.
17. Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Knowledge, Skill and Ability:
Knowledge of:
โ€ข California State Motor Vehicle Code, the California State Education Code and District policies and requirements related to the operation of vehicles used in the transport of students.
โ€ข Basic first aid practices, procedures and techniques.
โ€ข Safe driving practices.
Skill and Ability to:
โ€ข Understand and carry out both oral and written instructions in an independent manner.
โ€ข Establish and maintain proper student conduct on school vehicle.
โ€ข Drive a school bus safely and efficiently
โ€ข Exercise good judgment and extreme caution while driving.
โ€ข Maintain valid certification as a school bus driver according to State regulators.
โ€ข Meet the physical requirements necessary to safety and effectively perform required duties.
โ€ข Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
Training and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be: ability to read and write at a level sufficient to perform assigned duties.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
In order to perform this job successfully an individual must meet the physical requirements necessary to complete the essential job duties. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job duties.
