Position Summary

The Machine Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of equipment used in nursery production and material handling activities. This role ensures machinery is operated according to established procedures, production goals are achieved, and quality standards are maintained. The Machine Operator performs equipment inspections, monitors machine performance, conducts basic troubleshooting, and supports overall nursery operations while maintaining a safe work environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate forklifts, tractors, excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, skid steers, front-end loaders, and other agricultural or heavy equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Perform pre-operational and post-operational inspections to ensure equipment is in safe working condition.
  • Conduct daily equipment checks, including fluid levels, tires, tracks, hydraulics, lights, and safety devices.
  • Start, operate, monitor, and adjust equipment controls to ensure safe and productive operation.
  • Load, unload, transport, and position materials, equipment, plants, soil, and supplies.
  • Perform excavation, grading, land clearing, trenching, site preparation, and other equipment-related tasks as assigned.
  • Monitor equipment performance and identify operational issues, malfunctions, or safety concerns.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting and minor repairs when appropriate.
  • Report equipment failures, accidents, damage, and maintenance needs promptly.
  • Conduct routine cleaning, lubrication, and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.
  • Follow all company safety policies, operating procedures, and OSHA requirements.
  • Maintain required equipment inspection logs, maintenance records, and operational documentation.
  • Utilize proper hand signals, communication devices, and safe work practices when working around pedestrians and other equipment operators.
  • Assist with general farm, nursery, landscaping, construction, and material handling operations as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with supervisors and team members to meet operational and production goals.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Strong attention to safety, quality, and detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting, bending, standing, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience operating heavy equipment, including forklifts, excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, skid steers, loaders, tractors, and other agricultural or construction equipment.
  • Forklift certification or the ability to obtain certification.
  • Knowledge of excavation, grading, land preparation, and material handling practices.
  • Experience performing routine equipment inspections and preventive maintenance.
  • Ability to read and understand equipment operating manuals and safety procedures.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
