The staff pharmacist assures that the pharmacy department dispenses the correct medication to the correct patient by the correct route of administration at the right time. These tasks take a combination of individual participation and first line supervision of technician staff. The staff pharmacist will also participate in clinical pharmacy programs in accordance with currently established health care standards and hospital policies and procedures.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Inpatient Pharmacist:

  • Prepares and dispenses medication orders
  • Verifies accuracy of order based on physician direction
  • Interprets medication orders (verbal and written) and transcribes to computerized patient profiles accurately when necessary
  • Contacts and confers with physicians and nursing staff if there are any questions or irregularities regarding medication orders and advises health care professionals on matters relating to drug selection and dosage for patients.
  • Counsels patients when appropriate and answers patients' questions in regards to medications.
  • Answers phone calls and in-person requests politely and respectfully and communicates any issues requiring pharmacist attention to appropriate personnel
  • Attends hospital programs and meetings, and serves on committees.
  • Acts as a drug information resource to patients, medical staff, nursing staff and ancillary department personnel
  • Utilizes the Cerner system efficiently
  • Practices pharmacy, upholding required policies and procedures
  • Maintains working knowledge of all State and Federal laws and regulations affecting the practice of pharmacy.
  • Maintains records for adequate control and distribution of controlled substances, poisons, etc. received and issued in accordance with federal and state regulations
  • Supervises Pharmacy Technicians
  • Monitors work flow to ensure all daily functions are accomplished and directs pharmacy technicians to complete tasks in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Verifies all technician orders are filled correctly and efficiently, including sterile IV compounds
  • Orders controlled substances through CSOS.
  • Monitors drug inventory effectively, to ensure economical usage of supplies while maintaining patient safety and satisfaction
  • Maintains a hospital wide adverse drug reaction program
  • Evidences the knowledge and ability to assess and interpret data about the patient's growth and development in order to identify each patients needs and provide the appropriate care, including age related care, where appropriate.

  • Adheres to the standards of Magruder Hospital's corporate compliance policies and seeks guidance and training when necessary to resolve questions about the policies. Reports violations in accordance with corporate compliance and organizational standards.

  • Navigates the retail pharmacy software system efficiently and effectively and understands the workflow in the employee prescription process
  • Troubleshoots any insurance issues effectively
  • Utilizes the POS for processing patients through the system
  • Utilizes the Cerner system efficiently when necessary
  • Practices pharmacy, upholding required policies and procedures
  • Maintains working knowledge of all State and Federal laws and regulations affecting the practice of pharmacy.
  • Maintains records for adequate control and distribution of controlled substances, poisons, etc. received and issued in accordance with federal and state regulations
