Pharmacist I – RWJBarnabas Health

At RWJBarnabas Health, the Pharmacist I plays a critical role in comprehensive patient care and operational excellence. Operating with a high level of independence, they ensure that medications and IV admixtures are prepared, dispensed, and monitored in a safe and rational manner according to legal, regulatory, and hospital standards. They are responsible for evaluating medical orders, documenting clinical metrics, maintaining regulatory compliance, and delivering high-quality pharmaceutical care to all patient age groups, including geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric, and neonatal patients.

A typical day for a Pharmacist I may include:

  • Verifies and monitors medication-prescribing orders against established drug references, shortages, and Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee drug usage criteria before dispensing
  • Prepares, dispenses, and monitors both the prescribing and overall clinical effectiveness of all medications and IV admixtures across diverse patient populations
  • Utilizes a high level of independent decision-making to evaluate medical orders and ensure strict adherence to regulatory requirements and hospital policies
  • Enters, updates, and documents clinical interventions within the electronic health record system for all rejected orders or clinical modifications
  • Follows stringent department procedures to accurately document and report all medication errors, adverse drug reactions, and clinical interventions
  • Maintains professional proficiency by keeping up to date with changing hospital policies, departmental procedures, and complex clinical issues
  • Utilizes downtime efficiently to complete assigned organization competencies, departmental training modules, and clinical skill assessments
  • Collaborates seamlessly with providers, nurses, and the interdisciplinary care team to optimize medication safety and patient outcomes

  • Must hold and maintain an active Registered Pharmacist license in good standing from the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy
  • Ability to work part-time (22.5 hours per week) consisting of 2 day shifts and 1 evening shift per week, including every other weekend
  • Flexibility to accommodate rotated hospital holiday coverage and overnight coverage for vacations as appropriate
  • Previous experience in a hospital pharmacy environment is preferred
