Job description

Proposed Salary Range: Starting at $20.46 per hour (Based on Experience)
Work Schedule: Part-Time (8 hours per day, 3 days per week - First Shift)
Work Location: On-site (One Panasonic Dr. Columbus, GA 31907)

The Machinist sets up and operates conventional, special purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts.

The Machinist should have the capability to read and interpret process information; and understand the impact their actions have on the quality objective.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following other duties may be assigned.

  • Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements. May need clarification on some items.
  • Measures, marks, and scribes’ dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.
  • Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.
  • Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut.
  • Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
  • Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications.
  • Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.
  • Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly. May require assistance with assembly of some items.
  • Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly, with assistance when needed.
  • Installs machine replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and tests operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance. May require assistance with some repairs.
  • Operates welding equipment to cut or weld parts.
  • Maintain a clean, safe work environment in the Machine Shop.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and two to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively after groups of vendors or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
