Nurse Scientist
JOB SUMMARY
The Nurse Scientist plans, implements, and evaluates nursing research and evidence-based practice activities, to
promote the delivery of quality patient care and improved patient outcomes. The role facilitates nursing services
strategic research priorities. The Nurse Scientist is a change agent and a nurse leader who is responsible
for shaping a work environment to assure nursing practice is evidence-based and nursing knowledge is generated
through research. The Nurse Scientist will foster a culture of inquiry to bridge the gap between research and practice by engaging nurses in research and EBP. The Nurse Scientist will act as a leader, mentor, and coach and provide guidance for the development of resources and infrastructure for the nursing research and EBP programs. Activities may include working with professional governance councils, developing workflows and processes to meet program needs, staying abreast of current literature on key programmatic and practice areas, identifying and leading program improvements, leading various hospital-level initiatives, and providing feedback and guidance for nursing leaders. The Nurse Scientist's work is integrally involved and aligned with the goals of maintaining NEBH's Magnet® designation, PTAP accreditation
and the organization's and nursing's strategic plans. The Nurse Scientist will maintain their own program of research.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide consultation, mentoring, education, and guidance for individuals engaging in research activities to advance research in practice, evidence-based practice, the conduct of research, research utilization and dissemination of research activities
  • Serves on the Nursing Research Council; coordinates, guides, leads and provides support for council activities and serves as the liaison to the professional governance structure
  • Collaborates and develops innovative programs to educate, mentor, and enhance the knowledge of nursing staff with research activities
  • Shape and implement a vision of nursing research and evidence-based practice for NEBH.
  • Establish a plan and strategies to guide NEBH to be a national leader in nursing research and EBP
  • Institute structures and expectations to support dissemination of nursing research and evidence-based practice projects locally, regionally, and nationally (e.g. manuscript publications, conference presentations), both of their own program of research and that from within NEBH Nursing Department
  • Evaluate program outcomes and role model professional nursing practice behaviors measured through improved patient outcomes, increased efficiency, decreased cost, and enhanced visibility of NEBH research and evidence-based practice across NEBH, locally, regionally, and nationally
  • Develop and maintain professional networks within NEBH and at the regional and national level to promote professional and programmatic growth
  • Serve on and/or lead relevant Nursing and/or interprofessional workgroups and committees
  • Lead hospital-level EBP projects and research studies and conduct research, as the PI, within their own program of research
  • Coordinate efforts with other healthcare disciplines and NEBH departments to support improvement work and inquiry-based activities, including EBP projects and research studies, to advance professional nursing, clinical nursing practice, and processes

ALL DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS MUST BE PERFORMED CONSISTENT WITH NEBH PERFORMANCE STANDARDS.
Job Requirements:
Education: Minimum: Bachelor of Science in Nursing & Doctoral degree
Preferred: PhD
Work Experience: Minimum: Three (3) years of recent nursing experience
Preferred: Experience in developing Nursing Research and EBP programming at a Magnet recognized healthcare organization
Licenses & Certifications: Minimum: Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Massachusetts
Preferred: Certification in area of specialty or eligible for certification

  • Demonstrated command of research designs, methodologies, and ability to manage research studies both conceptually and practically within a data driven organization
  • Demonstrated command of evidence-based practice skills, including implementation and ability to bridge the gap between research and practice
  • Knowledge and ability to use computer applications in the analysis of data, writing, and presentation of information
  • Passion for teaching/learning, life-long learning and excellence, which elevates the abilities and competencies of themselves and those around them
  • Strong track record of establishing external relationships and collaborative alliances which facilitate teamwork and enhance the image of nursing practice, research, and general scholarship at a regional and national level
  • Passion for professional nursing practice and the ability to influence nursing practice to optimize the delivery of patient care and patient outcomes, which creates the optimal work environment for nurses and interdisciplinary colleagues
