Part-Time Safety Associate (CPBX)

Location: Bronx, NY

The Part-Time Safety Associate (Choice Pantry Bronx) is responsible for ensuring a safe and secure environment at our Choice Pantry Bronx location. This role involves patrolling, inspecting, and monitoring the premises to help ensure smooth operations and a positive participant experience.

The Part-Time Safety Associate (CPBX) will manage the guest line, ensure all guests sign in, and confirm adherence to agency rules and regulations in an orderly manner. Additional responsibilities include addressing guest disturbances or de-escalating conflicts.

The Part-Time Safety Associate (CPBX) will report to the Food Programs Manager (CPBX) at the 1290 Hoe Ave, Bronx, NY 10459 location. The schedule for this position is Wednesday through Saturday: 8:30 AM - 2:30 PM; 30-minute lunch break. This is a part-time, non-exempt position, scheduled for up to 22 hours per week.

Responsibilities:

• Monitor participant lines to ensure orderly entry into the facility and prevent individuals who are carrying weapons or who appear visibly intoxicated or under the influence of drugs or alcohol from entering the building.

• Assess safety concerns, incidents, and emergencies using sound judgment and discretion; de-escalate conflicts whenever possible and contact 911, emergency responders, or supervisory staff as appropriate.

• Support staff in identifying, managing, and responding to potentially dangerous situations, intervening when necessary to prevent escalation and maintain a safe environment.

• Provide crisis response assistance, including situations that may require physical intervention, in accordance with agency policies, training, and applicable safety protocols.

• Distribute tickets and manage participant lines during Pantry and other program services to promote efficient operations and a positive participant experience.

• Respond promptly when staff request assistance and react quickly and appropriately to emergencies, disturbances, or other high-stress situations.

• Escort disruptive or non-compliant participants from the facility when necessary and prepare timely, accurate incident reports for supervisory review.

• Coordinate and collaborate with law enforcement, emergency medical services, fire personnel, and other first responders as needed.

• Conduct routine patrols of the facility, including interior and exterior areas, to identify and address potential safety or security concerns.

• Prepare clear, accurate, and comprehensive written reports documenting incidents involving safety concerns, physical interventions, participant or staff misconduct, or other significant events.

• Maintain and regularly update the agency's restricted/banned participant list to ensure compliance with access restrictions.

• Open, secure, and monitor facility entrances and exits by unlocking and locking doors according to established schedules and operational needs.

• Assist supervisors in implementing workplace safety initiatives, including fire drills, emergency preparedness exercises, evacuation procedures, and other safety programs.

• Communicate professionally, respectfully, and effectively with participants, staff, volunteers, and visitors at all times.

• Foster a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative work environment that values diversity, teamwork, and professionalism.

• Provide participants with general program information and direct them to the appropriate staff or department for assistance.

• Support agency special events and large-scale distributions, including Thanksgiving distributions, toy giveaways, and other community events, by assisting with ticket distribution, crowd control, line management, and overall event safety.

• Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.

• Commitment to serving communities in need and supporting New York Common Pantry's mission and values. 

• Full professional proficiency in Spanish or Mandarin is preferred.

• New York State Security Guard Registration and security training are preferred.

• CPR, First Aid, and Naloxone (Narcan) certification is preferred.

• Strong communication, customer service, conflict resolution, and de-escalation skills.

• Strong multitasking skills and ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-traffic environment.

• Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment in emergencies.

• Basic computer skills for preparing incident reports and using email.
