Job description

LIBRARY ASSISTANT / YOUTH SERVICES
University City Public Library is hiring! If you are outgoing, creative, self-motivated, and possess both a positive attitude and a strong desire to help and work with children, teens, and their families, please apply. UCPL serves a highly diverse, civic-minded, eclectic population and enjoys tremendous community support. Our facility just completed a full-scale renovation, making it an exciting time to join us as we explore new ways to be of service, while continuing to offer one of the finest standalone library collections in metro St. Louis and an array of lifelong learning and entertainment opportunities for patrons.
Schedule: Part-time, evenings and weekends. Fixed but flexible scheduling, approximately 8-12 hours per week.
Reports to: Head of Youth Services
Pay: Range starts at $16.64
Benefits: Vacation and sick leave accrual, holiday pay depending on schedule
Required Qualities: Fine attention to detail, good interpersonal skills, ability to handle busy work periods calmly and handle challenging situations with tact, as well as initiative, motivation, and enthusiasm.
Desired Qualities: Familiarity with children's literature and media and comfort with technology such as ipads
Specific duties include:
  • Assist young patrons and their adults in finding library materials for various ages and a variety of reading skills including print, audiobooks, and ebooks
  • Find and recommend read-alike and subject-based titles and help school-age students access online resources
  • Perform book searches and place holds on materials
  • Explain library programs and policies to patrons
  • Sort and shelve library materials
  • Assist the librarian during programs for kids, teens and families
  • Other related work as requested
