Job description

The Correctional RN works in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, correctional officers, and administrators to ensure the well-being of the incarcerated population.  The Correctional RN utilizes their knowledge to address the specific challenges and limitations of the correctional environment while providing care to their patient population.  This care includes both routine and emergency health care in a correctional facility setting. 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Current Registered Nurse License for the state in which the nurse practices
  • Minimum of one year of correctional health care experience preferred
  • Current CPR if applicable
  • TB Questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable   
  • Must meet all federal, state and local requirements   
  • Must be at least 18 years of age 

RN Setting: Corrections 

Location: Otisville, NY 

Shift: Part-time Registered Nurse x2 to cover the overnight shift 10p-6a. 2. Part-time Registered Nurse x2 to cover the day shift 6a-2p. 3. Part-time Registered Nurse x1 to cover the evening shift 2p-10p

Local Hourly rate: $60.00.hr Weekly Pay Checks 

Full time benefits: Dental, Vision, 401k etc 

Recent experience required: Corrections, Med surg or ED 

One thing I want to emphasize is the security. The facility is very structured and very safe. Officers are always present, movement is controlled. Everything is done with safety protocols in place, and the medical unit is one of the most secure areas in the building.

?? Core RN Duties in a Correctional Facility

  • Daily assessments and sick call — evaluating incarcerated individuals for acute and chronic medical needs.
  • Medication administration — including controlled substances, psych meds, and strict documentation.
  • Intake screenings — completing physicals, TB tests, and identifying urgent medical or mental-health concerns.
  • Emergency response — being first on scene for fights, injuries, chest pain, seizures, or behavioral crises.
  • Wound care and chronic disease management — diabetes, hypertension, detox monitoring, etc.
  • Collaboration with security staff — coordinating movement, safety protocols, and responding to incidents.
  • Maintaining accurate charting — everything must be documented clearly for legal and safety reasons.
  • Supporting mental-health needs — recognizing red flags, escalating appropriately, and maintaining boundaries.
