Responsibilities:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. The Registered Nurse (RN) working with WOC Services will assist the WOC team in providing care and nursing management for patients with acute and potential disorders of the integumentary, genito-urinary, and gastrointestinal systems. These include but are not limited to: fecal and urinary diversions, wounds, drains, fistulas, and incontinence.
2. Assists WOC Team in a supportive role with the coordination process and identification of patients requiring referral for WOC Services and provides uncomplicated wound care and implementation of established plans of care for these patients, utilizing the nursing process.
3. Functions as a resource for patients, caregivers, and professional staff in the management of patients with ostomies, fistulas, draining wounds, and altered skin integrity.
4. Performs within the WOC team in such a manner that maintains established credibility and promotes utilization of WOC Services through maintenance of a high profile within the hospital and medical community.
5. Assists WOC team in supporting unit directors/managers in the development and implementation of patient education protocols for use by floor staff according to assessed needs.
6. Participates in staff development through the provision of structured in-service programs, as well as presentations during orientation for newly hired nursing staff.
7. Maintains accurate records and statistics and Assists WOC Team Leader/Patient Services Manager with QA audits and maintenance of policies and procedures as needed.
8. Participates in product and equipment evaluation and quality assurance committees.
9. Contributes to and supports research at the unit and institution level.
10. Is able to demonstrate competency in age specific criteria as applicable to job scope.
OTHER DUTIES:
1. The RN shall possess the qualities most exemplary of the nursing profession. These qualities include compassion, empathy, accountability, honesty, together with the knowledge and skills they have learned within their nursing education. The RN shall adhere to the standards of practice of NOMC.
2. The RN is a member of the health care team and is responsible for providing quality nursing care utilizing NOMC standards of care while assisting WOC Service with patient care.
3. The RN for WOC Services is a resource person for other members of the health care team and will utilize effective communication between personnel, physicians, other hospital departments, patients and families as appropriate.
4. Performs other duties as assigned by the Vice President/Patient Services or designee.
5. Follows North Oaks Health System's Compliance Programs and all Federal and State regulatory guidelines.
6. Contact with general public, outside companies and high contact with patients, families, physicians, Nursing Homes, Home Health Agencies, community organizations, equipment companies and insurance companies.
7. High level of contact with Nursing departments, Pharmacy, Social Services, Utilization Management, Physical Therapy as well as some degree of contact with other hospital departments.
8. Responsible for the safety of others, company funds or property, and confidential information.
9. Responsible for performance of work without immediate supervision and supervision of others.
10. Responsible to exercise critical judgement skills gained from training and experience.
a. Each patient and situation will present varied and individual clinical situations requiring professional judgment and adaptation. Policies set forth for clinical caregivers, and associated support personnel, are a resource for guiding and assisting the caregiver in his/her patient care decisions and actions. By themselves, however; the recommendations and steps found in policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines may not allow the caregiver to effectively adapt to the unique characteristics and challenges a patient or situation can present, or to other potential extenuating circumstances. Policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines are not intended to replace or supersede the responsibility of the caregiver to exercise critical judgment skills gained from training and experience to best serve the patient and the situation effectively. Nor are they intended to alone define the standard of care for all patients and clinical situations a caregiver will confront.
b. The caregiver should consider the recommended actions outlined in a policy, procedure, protocol and/or guideline in exercising professional judgement. Staff must then evaluate the circumstances presented and responsibly modify or supplement these recommendations when necessary to meet the individual, unique needs of a patient or situation.
