Job description

The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.

The Associated Press seeks three (3) part-time, temporary newspersons for its Regional Sports Desk. The part-time hires will be required to write, edit and re-write sports stories including college and professional leagues. To perform the tasks, they will be required to communicate with various sources, including but not limited to AP staff members, stringers and Sports Information Directors.

This is a part-time, remote position ranging from 4 to 14 hours per week that requires scheduling flexibility.

We are looking for newspersons who will:

  • Collaborate with a team of journalists, reporters and editors to write, edit and re-write sports stories using Pronto and other AP and third-party automated systems.
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills and work collaboratively with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
  • Be able to work under deadline pressure and to be able write about a wide range of sports.
  • Have a great sense of news, with the ability to communicate stories that people will want to share on social media and other platforms.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, such as at least three years of full-time news experience as a news assistant or researcher in a news bureau or regional desk.
  • Strong knowledge of sports (professional and college).
  • Proven interpersonal, organizational and planning skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects.
  • Self-directed and able to work effectively with others in a fast-paced production environment
  • Home computer (PC or Mac) and access to Wi-Fi is required.
  • Must be available to work nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Authorization to work in the United States for any employer is mandatory.

This position is covered by The Associated Press' contract with the News Media Guild, which provides for an annualized salary for Class A staff of between $53,477 and $85,214 based on location and years of professional experience. Compensation is contingent on a job candidate's skills, qualifications and market location. Employees are eligible to participate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan and employer-sponsored health insurance plan, and are eligible for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy.
