Job description

Director, Regulatory Affairs - PJM

Work Location: Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey (Remote)

Reporting to the Vice President of Regulatory and Policy, the applicant will be responsible for monitoring existing and potential energy market rules and regulatory developments, as well as establishing and overseeing implementation of strategies to influence desired energy regulations in the PJM and the southeast region. A significant component of the role will involve explaining existing PJM market rules, formulation and execution of markets strategies, policy, and advocacy to help advance the interests of our wholesale power marketing business, and its impact to the diversified portfolio of renewable energy assets. The applicant will be requested to join the management team in New York City periodically. Travel to meetings within regional organizations or state capitols in the PJM region will also be required as part of the normal course of business. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in PJM stakeholder processes, analyze and understand existing and proposed market rules, develop alternative company specific proposals, and work with other stakeholders in developing alliances and strategic relationships
  • Monitor, understand, analyze, and be able to present to internal team members energy market rules and regulations that are being proposed and contemplated in the PJM region
  • Collaborate and support regional team members and other departments (Regulatory, Trading, Operations, Origination, Legal, Compliance, Development,, etc.) to advance the company’s business interests and needs in both wholesale and retail power markets;
  • Actively participate in industry trade associations and stakeholder coalitions to advance aligned policy positions and influence market outcomes
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with PJM staff, key stakeholders, state regulators, state agencies, NGO community and other peers
  • Influence energy policy and regulation developments through direct contacts, networking and participation in industry organizations
  • Assist with due diligence related to M&A activities and commercial transactions.

 

Requirements

  • Demonstrated strategic thinking, analytical capabilities, and strong negotiation skills;
  • Strong political acuity, as well as knowledge of power and environmental markets, specifically in PJM;
  • Ability to work with trade associations, coalitions, and outside consultants as well as an internal team of professionals;
  • Experience working with regulators, stakeholders and industry advocacy groups;
  • Ability to resolve differences, build relationships and alliances to achieve targeted results;
  • Experience in project / case management and working on project teams;
  • Demonstrated skills in identifying and assessing business threats and opportunities;
  • Ability to explain complex PJM regulatory and market rules in detailed and at a high level depending on the external audience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to manage external consultants and lobbyists;
  • Highly self-motivated with the ability to work independently.

 

Qualifications

  • 10 years of wholesale markets regulatory experience, including at least 5 years of PJM market and regulatory experience;
  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Engineering, Business Administration, Political Science or related field; Master’s degree is preferred;
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with advocacy and PJM regional governance;
  • Relationship builder with extensive network with other energy regulatory, policy and environmental stakeholders in the PJM regions;
  • Willingness to travel, estimated between 30% and 50% depending on location.

Salary: $175,000 - $200,000
