Job Description Summary:
The English Department at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, is recruiting a pool of qualified individuals for possible part-time adjunct teaching appointments. For the current academic year, the department anticipates instructional needs in Creative Writing. The English Department at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, is recruiting a pool of qualified individuals for possible part-time adjunct teaching appointments. For the current academic year, the department anticipates instructional needs in Creative Writing.
This pool will remain open to address additional teaching needs that may arise throughout the year. Your application will remain active as long as the pool position is available but no more than one year. After one year, if you are still interested, you must reapply to the most current adjunct advertisement.
Within the College of Arts & Sciences, adjunct faculty may be responsible for:
• Teaching assigned undergraduate and/or graduate courses depending on unit need.
• Preparing syllabi and course materials.
• Delivering instruction and assessing student learning.
• Holding office hours.
• Fulfilling other instructional duties consistent with departmental needs.
Job Description:
Required Qualifications:
- A Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing or a closely related field, or equivalent experience and qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. or other appropriate terminal degree, or ABD status, in English or a related field at the time of appointment (August 10 for fall or January 10 for spring).
- Previous academic teaching experience is desirable.
Conditions of Employment:
- This position is not eligible for work visa sponsorship.
- This is a part-time position restricted to the term to which it is assigned and hired and is not eligible for benefits.
- The position may require additional hours beyond the typical work week, including occasional evenings, weekends, or overnight work as needed to meet operational requirements.
- As part-time exempt employees, adjuncts are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program. Total hours worked may not exceed an average of 29 hours per week over a twelve-month period beginning May 1 each year.
- Within Arts & Sciences, adjunct instructional workload limits apply. Total adjunct work hours for part-time employment from May 1 through April 30 may not exceed 1,500 hours, generally equating to up to 14 credit hours for fall/spring and up to 6 for summer, not to exceed 18 credit hours for the year.
- Adjuncts within the College of Arts & Sciences at William & Mary must maintain an in-person presence for the duration of their appointment. Remote teaching opportunities are rare and subject to approval.
Appointment Details:
Appointments are limited to a specified term and may include the following instructional sessions:
- Fall: August 10 - January 9
- Spring: January 10 - May 24
- Summer Session 1: May 26 - June 26*
- Summer Session 2: June 29 - July 31* (expected contract effective date: June 25)
- Summer Session 3: May 26 - July 31*
