Job description

Reading Tutor OpenLiteracy (POOL)Talent Pool Application | Remote | Part-time Contract (1099) | $28/hour | 10-20 hours/week

Please note: This is a talent pool posting, not an immediate opening. By applying, you'll be evaluated and added to our pool of qualified tutors. We draw from this pool on a rolling basis as new tutoring positions become available, so timelines vary and applying does not guarantee a placement or a specific start date. Candidates who are accepted into the pool will be contacted directly when a match is identified.

About OpenLiteracy

40% of fourth graders in this country read below grade level. At OpenLiteracy, our mission is to change that, one student at a time. We offer a suite of products and services designed to meet students and educators where they are: a purchasable reading curriculum grounded in the Science of Reading, Tier 2 intervention support for classroom educators, and high-impact, individualized Tier 3 tutoring. We don't just teach reading. We grow readers.

We're looking for passionate, certified educators to join our tutoring team and make a real difference in children's literacy outcomes across the country.

The Role

Once matched from the pool, you'll work 1:1 with students in grades K-6 through our secure online platform, using a curriculum designed by our team. No lesson planning required! Sessions are 25 minutes each, and you'll be matched with the same students over time, giving you the continuity needed to build the trusting relationships that struggling readers need most.

Great OpenLiteracy tutors balance explicit instruction with meaningful engagement with text, weaving comprehension into every step so students can have rich, confident conversations at any reading level.

Why Tutor With Us

Fully Remote All you need is a reliable device, strong Wi-Fi, and a quiet workspace. No commute, no classroom setup, and no lesson planning.

Competitive Pay Tutors begin at a starting rate of $28/hour once placed. You're also paid for student no-shows and late cancellations within 24 hours of the scheduled time. You are paid for any tutoring sessions and meetings you attend. Initial asynchronous orientation is compensated at a flat rate of $100.

Always 1:1 Tutoring All tutoring sessions are 1:1, meaning you can focus on building rapport and maximizing instruction for one student at a time.

Consistent Students Once placed, you're matched with the same students session after session, so your relationship-building skills genuinely matter.

Onboarding & Coaching Support All tutors complete a comprehensive paid onboarding and receive ongoing support from our learning specialist team once placed from the pool.

Breaks Aligned with Typical School-Year Schedules Tutors receive a week off at Thanksgiving, approximately two weeks off during the winter, and summers off. A small number of summer tutoring opportunities are available for interested tutors.

Qualifications

Required:

  • K-6 classroom teaching experience with a focus on reading

  • Able to provide at least 3 hours of consistent availability Monday-Thursday during peak hours (10:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. ET), minimum 4 days/week
  • Able to commit to at least 10 consistent hours per week
  • U.S. work authorization, U.S. mailing address, and ability to receive U.S. bank deposits
  • Reliable computer with camera and microphone, high-speed internet, and a quiet workspace

Please Note: We are currently unable to hire candidates based in California, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, or New Jersey.

Preferred:

  • Experience with Tier 3 reading intervention
  • Experience teaching English Learners
  • Experience supporting students with reading disabilities

Note: TOEFL certification and substitute teaching licenses do not fulfill the certification requirement.

You'll Thrive Here If You
  • Believe every student can learn to read with great instruction and the right support
  • Build warm, trusting relationships with students who have experienced difficulty with reading
  • Are organized, reliable, and manage your schedule with ease
  • Maintain a consistent availability; students depend on seeing the same tutor
  • Are energized by data and motivated by seeing measurable student growth
Application Process
  1. Complete the online application
  2. Respond to teaching-focused questions and submit short video responses
  3. Meet with a member of our hiring team for a short interview

  5. If accepted, you'll join our talent pool, and you'll be contacted when a tutoring placement becomes available that matches your availability and experience
