Job description

Your words can create change where nursing, labor, and advocacy meet.
The Washington State Nurses Association is the leading voice and advocate for registered nurses across Washington, advancing safe patient care, strong nursing practice, and the rights of nurses in the workplace. As a labor union and professional association, WSNA represents and supports nurses through collective bargaining, professional development, and advocacy at the state and local levels.
Why WSNA
When you join WSNA, you join the union and professional association that stands at the intersection of nursing, labor, and public policy in Washington State. Your work will directly support the nurses who keep our health care system running, helping them organize for better working conditions, advocate for safe staffing and patient care, and strengthen their collective voice in workplaces and communities across the state.
We offer a mission-driven, team-oriented environment where thoughtful communication is valued. Your ideas can shape campaigns and strategy, and the work has visible, real-world impact on nurses, patients, and the future of health care in Washington.
About the Role
WSNA is seeking a skilled communicator to help amplify nurses' collective voice in the workplace and in the public arena. In this role, you'll turn complex issues in nursing, labor, and health care policy into clear, compelling messages that mobilize members, inform the public, and support WSNA's organizing, bargaining, and advocacy work. Working closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications, you'll plan, produce, and edit content, collaborating across multiple channels (email, web, social media, newsletters, print, and promotional material) to advance WSNA's mission and strategic priorities.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Writing and editing member communications, newsletters, web and social content, and campaign materials.
  • Developing marketing communications that support membership recruitment, engagement, and retention.
  • Promoting union and association events, trainings, conferences, and labor actions.
  • Drafting press releases, statements, advisories, and talking points, and supporting media outreach.
  • Monitoring news and social media and helping craft timely organizational responses on issues affecting nurses.

Qualifications and Background:
  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) in communications, PR, marketing, journalism, or related field.
  • 2-4 years' experience in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, or nonprofit/union/association work.
  • Familiarity with nursing, labor relations, health care policy, advocacy, or professional association work.
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills across digital and print channels.
  • Background in membership, event, program, campaign, or public affairs communications, including audience-specific messaging and conversion-focused content.
  • Experience drafting media-facing materials (press releases, advisories, pitches, statements, speeches, talking points) and supporting media relations, translating communication strategy into campaign plans, content packages, production schedules, and cross-channel messaging with clear, accurate, audience-appropriate content.
  • Ability to advise internal stakeholders on message clarity, audience fit, reputational considerations, and communication approach, including high-visibility and labor-related communications.
  • Demonstrated experience writing and editing for multiple channels (email, web, social media, newsletters, print, promotional).
  • Proven ability to manage multiple assignments, deadlines, and review processes with strong attention to detail.

Skills and Competencies
  • Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and readability skills.
  • Familiarity with AP style.
  • Ability to tailor messages for different audiences, channels, and communication goals.
  • Sound judgment and professionalism when handling sensitive, high-visibility, or labor-related communications.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage deadlines and maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborative approach to working with subject-matter experts and cross-functional teams.
  • Working knowledge of email marketing, website content, social media, and basic communications metrics.
  • Commitment to member trust, equity, accessibility, and WSNA's mission.

Work Environment and Requirements
  • Full-time, hybrid role; office-based with part-time remote work flexibility.
  • Travel and attendance at WSNA events, media opportunities, meetings, and labor actions required.
  • Valid Washington driver's license and access to an insured, operational motor vehicle required.

How to apply:
Submit your resume, cover letter, and 2-3 writing samples that showcase your ability to communicate clearly and persuasively to diverse audiences.
