Job description

General Summary The Educator works under the direction of the Conservation Specialist, inside and outside, as related to natural resource education and interpretive programs throughout East Baton Rouge Parish. This requires scheduling educational programs, supervising camps staff and volunteers, presenting educational programs, research and development of educational curriculum, working with the camp, animal handling, and composing routine correspondence. Work involves interaction with other employees, volunteers, teachers, partners, and the general public.

Requirements and Job Specifications Education Required: Graduation from an accredited 4-year college or university Area of Study (major) Required: Education, Life Sciences, Natural Science or related field Certification(s) Required: First Aid & CPR certification w/in 30 days of hire License(s) Required: Valid LA driver's license. Years Relevant Work Experience: 2 years related experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Broad-based knowledge of natural sciences including botany, horticulture, geology, hydrology, chemistry, wetland functions, wildlife management and environmental ecology Computer and general office skills Excellent written & oral communication skills for public programming Excellent interpersonal/public relations skills Ability to train & direct staff Ability to work flexible hours including holidays, evenings, and weekends for programs or events Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, staff, volunteers, patrons, BREC officials, community interest groups, and the general public. Ability to quickly learn BREC policies and procedures and Programs Functions and Duties Essential Functions and Duties: Researches, develops and implements Education programs Assists with the direct supervision of Summer Camps, seasonal camp employees, part-time program staff, and volunteers (including counselors-in-training) Prepares and assists in scheduling and executing parish-wide programming and outreach. Assists in development and maintenance of exhibit graphics Handles education animals Assists with direction and training of volunteers (including counselors-in-training) Assists with grounds/trail maintenance at times Develops programs and activities for summer and holiday camps This job description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by this employee.
