Position Summary
McCormick Taylor is seeking an experienced Geotechnical Engineer with a minimum of 10 years of geotechnical engineering experience on PennDOT projects to join our team. The primary duties are to prepare and review Subsurface Exploration Planning Submissions, Structure Foundation Reports, and Geotechnical Engineering Reports in accordance with PennDOT DM-4 and AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. Qualified candidates should have a strong background in PennDOT geotechnical reviews, subsurface boring, sampling, and testing contract development, and design of Earth Retaining Systems and temporary shoring systems. Proficiency with geotechnical analysis software (LPILE, PCSTABL, ABLRFD, or similar) is required. Strong written, interpersonal and oral communication skills, attention to detail and ability to organize is required. The ideal candidate will thrive in a collaborative team environment, be able to handle multiple projects, and meet deadlines. This is a part-time position with a strong preference Pennsylvania-based applicants, however remote applicants will be considered for those able to obtain a Pennsylvania PE license. Position has the potential to grow into a full-time role if mutually beneficial.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare and review Subsurface Exploration Planning Submissions (SEPS) for transportation and structure projects
  • Develop Structure Foundation Reports for both deep foundations (piles, drilled shafts) and shallow foundations (spread footings)
  • Prepare comprehensive Geotechnical Engineering Reports (GER), including reconnaissance soils and geological engineering reports (RSGER)
  • Conduct geotechnical reviews of consultant-prepared submissions for PennDOT districts, ensuring compliance with PennDOT DM-4 and AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications
  • Develop and administer subsurface boring, sampling, and testing contract documents, including specifications, test boring location plans, and evaluating drilling contractor bids/proposals
  • Coordinate boring and testing programs remotely with drilling subcontractors and review resulting data/reports
  • Design Earth Retaining Systems (e.g., MSE walls, reinforced soil slopes) and temporary shoring/sheet-pile systems
  • Perform geotechnical design calculations using industry-standard software (LPILE, PCSTABL, ABLRFD, or similar) for lateral load analysis, slope stability, and foundation design
  • Prepare Type, Size & Location (TS&L) studies and reports for retaining walls, noise walls, and other structures
  • Perform foundation analysis for pile capacity (axial, lateral, uplift) and spread footing bearing capacity/settlement
  • Review and approve geotechnical shop drawings during the construction phase
  • Coordinate with subconsultants and internal design teams to ensure geotechnical scope, schedule, and deliverables are met
  • Prepare and/or review pavement design recommendations based on subsurface investigation data
  • Provide technical mentorship/QA-QC review of geotechnical deliverables prepared by junior staff or subconsultants as necessary
  • Occasional site and/or office may be required

Qualifications
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in geotechnical engineering on PennDOT projects.
  • Must be skilled in preparing Subsurface Exploration Planning Submissions, Structure Foundation Reports (deep and shallow foundations) and Geotechnical Engineering Reports
  • Experience with PennDOT geotechnical reviews is necessary
  • Knowledge of PennDOT DM-4 and AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications is essential
  • Must be experienced in office and field reconnaissance for geotechnical site investigations
  • Must have experience with subsurface boring, sampling, and testing contracts
  • Must have design experience with Earth Retaining Systems, and temporary shoring systems.
  • Must show experience using geotechnical computer programs (LPILE, PCSTABL, ABLRFD, etc.)
  • Active PA PE license required, or an active PE in another state with the ability to immediately obtain a PA license
