Job Title: Assistant Baseball Coach- Varsity
(Seasonal position - Spring)
Position Summary
To assist the Head Baseball Coach in providing leadership, organization, instruction, and supervision for the Sussex Central High School varsity baseball program. The Assistant Baseball Coach supports all aspects of the program, including player development, practice planning, game preparation, supervision of student-athletes, and compliance with VHSL and Sussex County Public Schools policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Head Baseball Coach in planning, organizing, and conducting practices, conditioning sessions, and team activities.
  • Teach and reinforce baseball fundamentals, including hitting, fielding, throwing, pitching, catching, base running, and game strategy.
  • Assist with player development by providing individual and small-group instruction designed to improve athletic performance.
  • Support game preparation activities, including scouting, lineup management, equipment preparation, and field setup.
  • Assist in supervising student-athletes during practices, games, travel, and team-related events.
  • Promote and maintain team discipline, accountability, attendance, and sportsmanship consistent with school and VHSL expectations.
  • Ensure student-athlete safety through proper instruction, supervision, and adherence to established safety protocols.
  • Assist with the supervision and management of locker rooms, dugouts, practice facilities, and playing fields.
  • Support communication efforts with student-athletes, parents, school personnel, and athletic department staff.
  • Assist with team fundraising activities and community engagement initiatives in accordance with school division guidelines.
  • Help maintain accurate records related to attendance, eligibility, equipment inventory, and team activities.
  • Assist with the distribution, collection, and maintenance of uniforms and equipment.
  • Attend all required practices, games, tournaments, meetings, and team functions unless otherwise excused.
  • Participate in VHSL-required coaching education programs and maintain all required certifications.
  • Promote academic achievement, leadership development, teamwork, character, and positive citizenship among student-athletes.
  • Assist with the development of future baseball athletes through collaboration with middle school and youth baseball programs when appropriate.
  • Represent Sussex Central High School and Sussex County Public Schools in a professional and positive manner at all times.

Qualifications
  • Experience coaching and/or participating in baseball at the high school level or higher preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of baseball fundamentals, player development, and game management.
  • Familiarity with VHSL rules, eligibility requirements, and athletic compliance standards.
  • Strong communication, organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, parents, coaching staff, administrators, and community stakeholders.
  • Teaching certification preferred (may vary by school division).
  • Compliance with all background checks, school division hiring requirements, and VHSL coaching certifications.

Work Conditions
  • Practices, games, tournaments, and team activities are conducted after school, evenings, weekends, and during school holidays.
  • Travel required for away contests, tournaments, and team events.
  • Seasonal stipend position (supplemental contract).
  • Outdoor work environment requiring extended periods of standing, walking, physical activity, and active supervision.

Performance Standards
  • Maintains full compliance with VHSL regulations and Sussex County Public Schools policies regarding eligibility, safety, and ethical conduct.
  • Supports the Head Baseball Coach in establishing and maintaining a positive, disciplined, and inclusive team culture.
  • Demonstrates reliability and professionalism through consistent attendance and active participation in team activities.
  • Maintains effective communication with coaches, student-athletes, parents, and athletic administration.
  • Ensures proper care, accountability, and maintenance of equipment, uniforms, and facilities.
  • Contributes to athlete growth and development in the areas of skill, leadership, sportsmanship, academic achievement, and character.
  • Promotes a safe and supportive environment that prioritizes student-athlete well-being and success.
  • Positively represents Sussex Central High School and Sussex County Public Schools within the school and community.

Terms of Employment
  • Seasonal supplemental coaching contract.
  • Compensation based on the Sussex County Public Schools approved coaching supplement schedule.
  • Employment contingent upon successful completion of all required background checks, VHSL certifications, and division requirements.
