Part Time Pressure Vessel Inspector information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time pressure vessel inspector?

To thrive as a Part Time Pressure Vessel Inspector, you need a solid understanding of mechanical engineering principles, knowledge of relevant codes (such as ASME) and standards, and typically a certification like API 510. Familiarity with inspection tools, non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques, and digital reporting systems is essential. Attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and effective communication set top inspectors apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring regulatory compliance, equipment safety, and the prevention of costly or hazardous failures.

What is the difference between Part Time Pressure Vessel Inspector vs Part Time Boiler Inspector?

AspectPart Time Pressure Vessel InspectorPart Time Boiler Inspector

Work EnvironmentInspecting pressure vessels in manufacturing, chemical, or energy plantsInspecting boilers in industrial, commercial, or institutional settings
Industry UsageCommonly employed in industries with pressure vessel regulationsPrimarily used in facilities with steam boilers and related equipment

Both roles require similar certifications and involve inspecting pressure-related equipment, but the Pressure Vessel Inspector focuses on vessels under pressure, while the Boiler Inspector specializes in boilers. The choice depends on the specific equipment and industry focus.

What is a part time pressure vessel inspector?

Part Time Pressure Vessel Inspectors are professionals who assess and verify the safety and integrity of pressure vessels, such as boilers and storage tanks, on a part-time basis. Their duties typically include performing inspections, reviewing maintenance records, testing for leaks or weaknesses, and ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulations. Working part time, they may be employed by inspection agencies, insurance companies, or directly by industrial facilities. Their inspections help prevent accidents and ensure that equipment operates safely and efficiently. Certification or licensing is often required, depending on local regulations.

What does a typical work schedule look like for a part time pressure vessel inspector, and how flexible are the hours?

As a part-time Pressure Vessel Inspector, your schedule is often determined by the inspection needs of clients and the availability of equipment. Many part-time inspectors work on an as-needed basis, which means shifts can vary from week to week. While some assignments are scheduled in advance, others may require short notice, especially in response to urgent compliance checks or equipment issues. This role typically offers a good degree of flexibility, making it suitable for those who prefer or require variable hours, but it also demands adaptability to changing workloads and locations.

Job description

QA/QC Manager

Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced QA/QC Manager with a strong background in ASME pressure vessel fabrication to lead quality assurance initiatives on the shop floor. This pivotal role requires a hands-on professional who can enforce rigorous quality standards, ensure full compliance with ASME codes, and foster a culture of accountability within a highly structured and procedure-driven environment. If you thrive on driving quality excellence and possess a deep understanding of pressure vessel fabrication processes, this opportunity offers a chance to make a significant impact in a reputable, long-standing industrial organization.

Responsibilities

  • Lead all QA/QC activities related to ASME pressure vessel fabrication.
  • Enforce strict adherence to ASME Section VIII, V, IX, and internal QC procedures.
  • Oversee inspection procedures, including NDT (VT, PT, MT, RT, PMI), dimensional inspections, hydro testing, and weld verification.
  • Ensure accurate documentation and turnover packages for each project.
  • Manage weld quality programs and ensure compliance with WPS/PQR standards.
  • Conduct audits of fabrication processes and enforce quality hold points.
  • Review material traceability, MTRs, and ensure code compliance.
  • Act as the primary accountability driver on the shop floor, advocating for quality at every step.
  • Interface effectively with production, engineering, and clients on quality-related matters.

Requirements

  • 5–10+ years of QA/QC experience within ASME pressure vessel fabrication.
  • Strong knowledge of ASME Section VIII, V, IX, welding processes, PWHT, and NDT methods.
  • Proven experience working in a fabrication shop environment, not solely office QA.
  • Demonstrated ability to enforce standards and hold teams accountable for quality.
  • Excellent documentation, reporting, and communication skills.
  • Preferred certifications include CWI (Certified Welding Inspector).
  • Experience working with complex alloys such as carbon steels and nickel alloys is advantageous.
  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience in QA/QC roles is preferred.
