Job Description

WHAT'S THE JOB?

Reporting to the Account Manager, the Senior HVAC Technician is responsible for the maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and optimization of commercial and industrial HVAC/R systems across client sites. Acting as a technical subject matter expert, this role provides mentorship to junior technicians, supports operational planning, and ensures all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable codes, standards, and contractual service requirements.

The Senior HVAC Technician plays a key role in maintaining critical building systems to maximize equipment reliability, energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and client satisfaction.

Your work will include:

Technical Operations:

  • Install, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair commercial HVAC and refrigeration equipment including:
    • Rooftop Units (RTUs)
    • Air Handling Units (AHUs)
    • Chillers
    • Boilers
    • Cooling towers
    • Heat pumps
    • Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems
    • Split systems
    • Exhaust and supply fans
  • Perform preventative maintenance in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and client maintenance schedules.
  • Diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, and controls issues.
  • Complete system commissioning and functional testing.
  • Perform equipment replacements and retrofits.
  • Conduct seasonal HVAC changeovers.
  • Monitor equipment performance and recommend repairs or capital replacements.

Client Service:

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with clients.
  • Communicate equipment conditions and repair recommendations clearly and professionally.
  • Respond to emergency service calls and critical equipment failures.
  • Provide technical guidance during client meetings when required.

Leadership & Mentorship:

  • Mentor and coach junior HVAC technicians and apprentices.
  • Assist with training on safety procedures, troubleshooting techniques, and best practices.
  • Support scheduling and work prioritization.
  • Provide technical expertise to operations teams during complex service activities.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Perform all work in accordance with:
    • Provincial safety legislation
    • Dexterra Health & Safety policies
    • WHMIS requirements
    • Lockout/Tagout procedures
    • Environmental regulations
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable mechanical, electrical, refrigeration, and building codes.

Documentation:

  • Complete work orders accurately using CMMS systems.
  • Record labour hours, materials, equipment history, and service reports.
  • Maintain preventive maintenance records.
  • Assist with asset lifecycle documentation.
    Qualifications

    WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

    Education & Certifications:

    • Licensed Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic (313A) required.
    • 4th Class Power Engineer designation
    • Gas Technician 2 (G2) licence required.
    • Gas Technician 1 (G1) considered an asset.
    • Ozone Depletion Prevention (ODP) Certification.
    • Valid Class G Driver's Licence with clean driving record.

    Experience:

    • 7+ years of commercial HVAC service experience.
    • Experience servicing institutional, healthcare, commercial, industrial, or government facilities.
    • Strong knowledge of HVAC controls
    • Experience working with CMMS platforms.
    • Experience mentoring apprentices or junior technicians is preferred.

    Technical Knowledge:

    • HVAC systems
    • Refrigeration systems

    • Pneumatic and DDC controls
    • Electrical troubleshooting

    • Preventive maintenance programs
    • Energy management principles

    Physical Requirements

    • Lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
    • Work at heights using ladders and lifts.
    • Work in confined spaces.
    • Bend, kneel, crouch, and climb regularly.
    • Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
    • Participate in an on-call rotation as required.
