Non-Sterile Hazardous & Non-Hazardous Compounding | Job Description

Job Title: Certified Compounding Pharmacy Technician

Reports To: Pharmacist / Owner

Location: Tustin, CA

Employment Type: Part-Time

Compensation: $23 – $30/hour DOE

About Us

We are a start-up compounding-only pharmacy in Tustin, CA dedicated to personalized, high-quality medications that help patients achieve optimal health and wellness. Our focus includes hormone replacement therapy, low-dose naltrexone, dermatology, weight management, sexual health, pediatric preparations, pain management, veterinary formulations, and more.

We are building this pharmacy the right way — with strong systems, regulatory integrity, and a culture rooted in safety and excellence. Every team member plays a direct role in patient outcomes, and we take that responsibility seriously.

Position Overview

The Certified Compounding Pharmacy Technician is the heart of our compounding operation. This individual is responsible for preparing both hazardous and non-hazardous compounded medications with precision and full adherence to USP <795>, and <800> standards and pharmacy SOPs.

As our first technician in a startup environment, you will initially be the primary compounder and must be comfortable working independently under the supervision of the pharmacist. Attention to detail, reliability, and a genuine commitment to patient safety are non-negotiable in this role.

This is not a lead position initially, but there is a clear path to a Senior or Lead Compounding Technician role for the right candidate as the pharmacy grows.

Key Responsibilities

Compounding

•       Prepare non-sterile compounded medications including creams, capsules, suspensions, troches, suppositories, and other dosage forms per USP <795>

•       Prepare hazardous compounds in full compliance with USP <800>

•       Follow all master formula records (MFRs) and complete batch and compounding records accurately and efficiently

•       Perform in-process quality checks including weight verification, pH testing, and visual appearance inspections

•       Apply, review, and verify labels for accuracy prior to dispensing

•       Assign and document beyond-use dates (BUDs) per USP guidelines and pharmacy SOPs

Compliance & Safety

•       Follow all hazardous drug handling procedures and required PPE protocols per USP <800>

•       Perform proper gowning and garbing procedures in accordance with USP standards

•       Execute hazardous drug waste disposal and spill response procedures correctly and safely

•       Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitized lab environment, complete cleaning and disinfection logs

•       Monitor and document storage conditions, temperature logs, and expiration dates

•       Immediately identify, document, and report any deviations, errors, or safety concerns to the supervising pharmacist

•       Participate in all required training, competency assessments, and compliance activities

Inventory & Lab Support

•       Receive and verify incoming raw materials and APIs against certificates of analysis (COAs)

•       Track component usage, expiration dates, and rotate stock appropriately

•       Perform equipment function checks including balance calibration and pH meter verification

•       Support environmental monitoring activities including surface sampling as required per USP 800

•       Maintain proper labeling and storage of all raw materials and finished preparations

Duties may evolve with business needs

•       Ability to lift and carry supplies up to 25–30 lbs

•       Comfortable wearing full PPE including gloves, gown, hair cover, shoe covers, and respirator for extended periods

•       Fine motor skills required for precise weighing, measuring, and preparation tasks

Core Competencies

•       Technical Precision — Measures, prepares, and documents with exactness every single time; understands that small errors in compounding can have serious patient consequences

•       Honesty & Transparency — Reports errors and deviations immediately without fear; understands that catching a mistake early is always the right call
