What is a Part Time Pediatric RN?

A Part Time Pediatric RN is a registered nurse who specializes in caring for infants, children, and adolescents, but works fewer hours than a full-time nurse, typically under 30-36 hours per week. These nurses assess and monitor young patients, administer medications, assist with treatments, and educate families about health care needs. Part time positions can offer flexible schedules, making them ideal for those balancing other commitments while still providing critical pediatric care. They may work in hospitals, clinics, doctor's offices, or home health settings.

Both roles require RN licensure and pediatric-specific skills. The main difference lies in employment hours, with Part Time Pediatric RNs working fewer hours, offering more flexibility. Both roles are vital in pediatric healthcare settings and share similar responsibilities and work environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Pediatric RN, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Pediatric RN, you need a valid RN license, strong pediatric assessment skills, and experience in child-focused care, often supported by certifications like PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support). Familiarity with pediatric EHR systems, medication administration, and age-appropriate medical equipment is typically required. Compassion, patience, and excellent communication with both children and their families are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure safe, effective care and foster trust with young patients and their caregivers, even in part-time roles where consistency is vital.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time pediatric RNs, and how can they be managed?

Part-time pediatric RNs often face challenges such as staying updated with patient care plans and maintaining strong communication with the healthcare team due to their limited hours. To manage this, it's important to utilize thorough handoff reports, actively participate in team meetings when possible, and make use of digital charting systems to stay informed about patient progress. Building strong relationships with fellow nurses and physicians also helps ensure continuity of care and smooth transitions during shift changes.

Company Description

Unify Health is a physician-led clinic in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, with over 50 physicians and surgeons working alongside dozens of allied health professionals. Our multi-disciplinary team collaborates to provide comprehensive, personalized healthcare services based on the latest scientific evidence. We aim for efficiency and comfort in delivering high-quality care. Our mission is to UNIFY your healthcare services and team under one roof.

Role Description

Unify Health is a multidisciplinary medical and surgical centre in midtown Toronto, integrating primary care, specialty care, and allied health services within a collaborative ambulatory model. We are seeking a skilled and reliable Part-Time Procedural & Infusion Nurse (NP, RN or RPN) to support our expanding procedural and infusion services.

This is an on-site, part-time role with flexible scheduling. The successful candidate will work in a high-quality community-based clinical environment alongside specialists in plastic surgery, urology, oculoplastics, vascular surgery, dermatology, internal medicine, and family medicine.

The nurse will be responsible for delivering safe, efficient, and patient-centred infusion and procedural care, including IV insertion, medication administration, peri-procedural support, and post-procedure monitoring. The role requires strong technical skills, clinical judgment, and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.

This position is ideal for a nurse who is comfortable in procedural settings, enjoys technical clinical work, and values flexibility while working in a sophisticated ambulatory care environment.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care

  • Perform peripheral IV insertion and manage IV infusions (e.g., iron infusions, biologics, injectable therapies, fluids).
  • Assist with minor procedures across specialties (dermatology, plastics, urology, vascular, oculoplastics).
  • Prepare patients for procedures, including consent verification, pre-procedure assessment, and patient education.
  • Monitor patients during and after infusions/procedures, recognizing and managing adverse reactions according to protocols.
  • Maintain strict adherence to infection control, sterile technique, and safety standards.

Operational & Team-Based Care

  • Collaborate closely with physicians, specialists, and allied health professionals.
  • Document clinical encounters accurately in the EMR.
  • Support workflow efficiency in procedural and infusion clinics.
  • Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives as required.

Work Structure

  • Position: Part-time
  • Schedule: Flexible hours (weekday evenings and/or weekends may be available depending on service demand)
  • Setting: Community-based multidisciplinary ambulatory medical and surgical centre

Qualifications

Required

  • RN or RPN in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
  • Demonstrated experience with IV insertion and infusion therapy.
  • Experience assisting in procedural or surgical settings (e.g., dermatology, plastics, ambulatory surgery, endoscopy, infusion clinics).
  • Strong clinical assessment and patient monitoring skills.
  • Excellent communication, professionalism, and teamwork abilities.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.

Preferred

  • Experience with infusion therapies, iron infusions, or specialty clinic workflows.
  • Familiarity with EMRs (e.g., Accuro or similar systems).
  • ACLS or BLS certification (as appropriate to scope).
  • Experience in ambulatory or outpatient procedural settings.

Professional Attributes

  • High level of technical competence and attention to detail.
  • Calm, confident approach to procedural and infusion care.
  • Commitment to patient-centred, evidence-based practice.
  • Interest in working within an innovative, integrated clinical model.

Compensation

  • Competitive hourly compensation, commensurate with experience and scope of practice.
  • Opportunities for additional shifts as procedural and infusion volumes expand.
