What is a part time optical job?

Part time optical jobs are positions in the eye care and eyewear industry that require fewer hours than a standard full-time schedule, often ranging from 10 to 30 hours per week. These roles can include positions such as optical sales associate, optician, or optical assistant, and involve assisting customers with selecting eyeglasses, performing basic vision tests, and supporting optometrists. Part time optical jobs are ideal for students, individuals seeking flexible work, or those interested in gaining experience in the optical field without a full-time commitment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time optical assistant?

To thrive as a Part Time Optical Assistant, you need a basic understanding of eye care, customer service experience, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with optical equipment, point-of-sale systems, and appointment scheduling software is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask help you deliver exceptional service and support to both customers and optometrists. These skills ensure efficient daily operations, high customer satisfaction, and a positive experience in the optical environment.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time optical staff, and how can they be managed?

Part-time optical staff often juggle multiple responsibilities, such as assisting customers with frame selection, performing basic vision tests, and managing administrative tasks like scheduling appointments. One common challenge is staying current with product knowledge and changes in optical technology while working limited hours. To manage this, it’s helpful to proactively communicate with full-time colleagues, participate in any available training sessions, and make use of online resources provided by the employer. Building strong teamwork skills and maintaining flexibility can also help part-time staff succeed in a dynamic retail environment.

Welcome to Specsavers - where we're not just about eyewear and eyecare, but about changing lives through better sight. Ranked the 5th Best Workplace in Canada and 12th globally by Great Place to Work, we're proud of our optometrist-owned model that delivers high-quality, accessible eyecare for every budget.

Founded 40 years ago in the UK by visionary optometrists Doug and Mary Perkins, Specsavers has remained privately owned since day one. Today, we are a $7.8 billion global business with over 45,000 colleagues across more than 2,700 retail optical locations.

In Canada, our support office is based in Burnaby, BC. Since entering the market in 2021, we've been scaling rapidly, now with over 250 locations nationwide. With advanced clinical equipment and a wide range of affordable, high-quality eyewear, we're transforming the way Canadians experience eyecare.

If you're passionate about making a difference and want to be part of a values-driven organization, join us as we continue to grow. Together, we can change lives through better sight.

What You'll Do

As the face of Specsavers, our Retail Associates (Eyecare Consultants) play a vital role in delivering exceptional eye care and affordable eyewear for everyone. You will create memorable experiences for our customers, guiding them through our stylish frame collections and supporting those trying contact lenses for the first time. No Optical experience? No problem - we will provide full training and support to help you succeed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Welcome customers warmly, creating a friendly and approachable environment in the store.
  • Build strong connections by understanding customers' needs and recommending the best possible eyecare solutions.
  • Guide customers in selecting frames that suit their lenses and personal style.
  • Explain offers, products, and services clearly and confidently to ensure customers make informed choices.
  • Perform pre-screening tests such as retinal imaging, pressure checks, and visual field testing (full training provided).
  • Measure and adjust frames for a comfortable and precise fit.
  • Process orders for prescription glasses and contact lenses accurately and efficiently.
  • Schedule follow-up appointments to maintain excellent customer care.
  • Act as a proud ambassador for Specsavers, championing our behaviors and values in every interaction.

What We're Looking For

  • Availability to work evenings and weekends is required for this role
  • A passion for creating "WOW" moments through exceptional customer service and finding innovative ways to enhance the optical shopping experience
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced retail environment, staying organized and composed under pressure.
  • Reliability and flexibility to work retail hours
  • Friendly, outgoing, and confident demeanor, paired with the ability to provide knowledgeable product recommendations and styling advice
  • Motivated by building long-term customer relationships, embracing Specsavers' Customer Experience model that prioritizes lasting connections over short-term results
  • Previous experience in retail or customer service is an asset-but not essential
  • Enthusiasm for learning about frames, lenses, and pre-testing procedures
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada. Specsavers is unable to provide support for immigration or permanent residency applications

Speccies' Benefits:

  • Vacation: 3 weeks paid vacation (prorated for hours worked)
  • Extra Time Off: 1 day of paid Birthday Leave and 1 day of Volunteer Leave each year
  • Vision Care: Enjoy 2 free pairs of glasses or a 12-month supply of contact lenses annually
  • Friends & Family Discounts: 4 vouchers per year, each offering 25% off
  • Employee Assistance Program: Confidential support for mental health, financial, and personal well-being
  • Career Growth: Ongoing investment in your professional development and advancement

  • Curious: We question, explore, and seek out diverse perspectives to develop our knowledge and understanding
  • Courageous: We challenge the status quo, we experiment with good ideas, and we are brave, bold, and fast in our decision-making
  • Compassionate: We care, support, and help each other
  • Commercial: We treat money wisely and make decisions that are good for our customers, our partners, our people, and good for the long term
